Hand-picked news:

🏗️ Zuckerberg goes all-in on AI infrastructure ↗️LINK

  • Meta announced Meta Compute, a new top-level initiative to build AI infrastructure at unprecedented scale, with plans to add tens of gigawatts this decade and hundreds of gigawatts over time as the AI race increasingly centers on compute.

  • The effort will be co-led by infrastructure chief Santosh Janardhan and Daniel Gross, backed by a $600B U.S. infrastructure commitment by 2028, long-term nuclear power deals for data centers, and government partnerships overseen by new president Dina Powell McCormick.

  • The announcement coincides with reported layoffs of roughly 10% in Meta’s Reality Labs division, underscoring Mark Zuckerberg’s shift away from metaverse bets and toward ensuring AI talent and infrastructure scale won’t be a limiting factor.

🍏 Siri is getting a big Gemini-powered upgrade ↗️LINK

  • Apple and Google revealed that Gemini will help power a more personalized Siri, allowing conversational answers to factual questions, storytelling, emotional support, travel booking, and creating documents like recipes in the Notes app, with some features arriving as early as spring.

  • Apple plans to announce more Siri upgrades at WWDC, including conversation history and proactive suggestions based on app data such as Calendar, expanding on earlier promises around personal context awareness, on-screen understanding, and deeper per-app controls.

  • The revamped Siri, first previewed at WWDC 2024, is expected to launch with iOS 26.4 in March or April, though some advanced capabilities are reportedly delayed until iOS 27.

🤖 Slackbot becomes an AI agent inside Slack ↗️LINK

  • Salesforce has launched a new AI-powered Slackbot that can find information, write emails, and schedule meetings directly inside Slack for Business+ and Enterprise+ users.

  • The new Slackbot can also connect to tools like Microsoft Teams and Google Drive (with permission), helping employees work across apps without switching platforms.

  • Salesforce CTO Parker Harris says this is just the start, with future plans to add voice features and web browsing as Slackbot evolves beyond a text-only assistant.

⚖️ New Senate bill targets AI-generated explicit images ↗️LINK

  • The US Senate unanimously passed the Defiance Act, a bill that would let victims sue over sexually explicit AI-generated images created without their consent, responding to growing concern about AI-enabled sexual abuse.

  • Lawmakers pointed to repeated misuse of X’s AI chatbot Grok, which has been used to generate nonconsensual images of women and girls, arguing that existing takedown rules don’t give victims enough legal protection.

  • The bill would allow victims to seek damages and restraining orders, builds on an earlier law criminalizing the distribution of such images, and now must pass the House before being sent to the president.

📱 Taiwan issues arrest warrant for OnePlus CEO ↗️LINK

  • Taiwanese authorities issued an arrest warrant for OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, accusing him of illegally employing workers in Taiwan, with two Taiwanese citizens also indicted in the case.

  • Prosecutors allege OnePlus recruited more than 70 Taiwanese engineers by setting up a Hong Kong shell company and operating an unapproved Taiwan branch focused on phone R&D starting in 2015.

  • Officials say these actions violated Taiwan’s Cross-Strait Act, which requires Chinese companies to obtain government permission before hiring workers in Taiwan.
