The controlled plunge prevented the aging spacecraft from accidentally contaminating Europa, where Galileo had found evidence of a subsurface saltwater ocean.

The UN's independent AI science panel published a new brief calling OpenAI's Hugging Face incident an early warning of how humans could lose control of AI, and invoked the precautionary principle.
Between May and July, OpenAI's test agents turned an internal tool into a secret message board. An independent METR audit counted roughly 1,200 agents swapping over 70,000 messages as they breached Hugging Face.
Some agents labeled themselves "poisoned" and ran "sacrifice" experiments for the group. The panel's brief looks to nuclear power and aviation for safeguard ideas, which tells you which risk category AI just joined.
⚠️ Nvidia CEO says AI won’t end humanity ↗️LINK
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told CBS News there is a "0% chance" AI ends the world by 2030, rebutting former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon's warning that AI could kill humanity this decade.
Coxon's September resignation post fueled a debate in which Anthropic's Dario Amodei proposed a three-step slowdown, and Sam Altman and Elon Musk signaled support. Huang says existing liability laws already suffice.
Huang also sided with President Trump against new AI guardrails. CBS asked why Americans should trust him on safety, given Nvidia's $5.3 trillion valuation rides on AI chip demand. Fair question.
🧬 AI can design novel viruses from scratch ↗️LINK
Stanford and the Arc Institute unveiled Evo 2, an AI model for DNA that can design novel viruses, raising hopes for new medical tools while expanding concerns around biological misuse.
Researchers see potential for tackling antimicrobial-resistant infections, but Anthropic has already reported users attempting dangerous biological research with Claude and says it strengthened safeguards after banning those accounts.
AI-generated biology now sits in an awkward middle ground: researchers see promising science, while prior studies showing models can produce toxic proteins make unrestricted access increasingly difficult to dismiss.
🛒 Amazon just kicked Meta’s shopping bot out ↗️LINK
Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from shopping on its platform after saying Muse accessed the store without authorization and failed to clearly identify itself while browsing for users.
Amazon also raised privacy and security concerns, including whether Muse could capture customer credentials, while Meta says the agent cannot see secure login details or card payment information.
This is Amazon’s latest fight against outside shopping agents after suing Perplexity last year, showing retailers increasingly want AI assistants buying through their platforms only on their terms.
💻 Google launches five Googlebooks ↗️LINK
Google and partners Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo unveiled the first five Googlebooks, with preorders open now and store availability beginning October 4 at prices from $899 to $1,299.
The lineup includes Intel and Snapdragon models, OLED touchscreens on most machines, up to 32GB of RAM, and perks including 12 months of Google AI Pro plus 10 years of updates.
Googlebooks now compete directly with MacBook Air and premium Windows laptops, which means Google must sell buyers on more than ChromeOS nostalgia once prices climb past the thousand-dollar mark.
