Uber cut 10% of jobs in community operations, its global customer support arm, and told remote staff on the team to move to a hub office under the return to office rule.

Uber said the changes simplify operations and let it embrace AI. A VP memo called the org too complex and siloed, arguing Uber needs cleaner structure before layering AI on top.

Uber never said how big the team was, so the real number stays hidden. It also still lists over 500 open roles, including engineers for its robotaxi partnerships.

OpenAI launched Presence, a product that helps big companies run AI voice and chat agents for customer support. Each agent gets one job and only the access that job needs.

OpenAI says Presence already runs its own English phone line and resolves 75% of calls without a person. BBVA Mexico, SoftBank and Australian insurer IAG are testing it too.

You cannot just buy Presence. OpenAI engineers build every rollout by hand, which is exactly the consulting business its $4 billion Deployment Company launched in May to scale.

The Department of Energy selected 278 projects for its Genesis Mission, the AI science program Trump created by executive order in November, picking from more than 5,000 applications.

Universities lead 168 projects and national labs lead 87, with the biggest award putting $60 million over three years into building nuclear plants faster. Winners get DOE supercomputers, frontier models, and agentic tools.

DOE calls this the largest response to any funding opportunity in its history, and promises the program will double American scientific productivity. The 278 picks still have to negotiate their awards first.

Google launched selfie video sign in, a backup way to get into your account when you lose your phone or forget your details. You record guided head movements to save your face.

Google compares your new video to the saved one, and the movements prove a live person sits in front of the camera instead of a photo or deepfake. Videos stay encrypted.

You can delete the video anytime, though Google also asks whether it can use your face to improve its facial recognition and age estimation tools. Workspace and kids accounts stay out for now.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple will refresh every Mac it sells, with 11 new models over roughly two years. The wave starts this fall with a 14-inch MacBook Pro and new iMacs.

The big one is a redesigned 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen, due late 2026 or early 2027. Apple already tests it with macOS 27.1, landing in October.

Gurman says that flagship ships with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, not M6, because Apple skipped ahead to M7. So the newest Mac arrives with last year's high-end silicon.
