Hand-picked news:

💰 Americans could get a cut of AI profits ↗️LINK

  • The White House and OpenAI are reportedly discussing a deal where the US government takes a 1-5% equity stake, channeling shares into a "Public Wealth Fund" that would give Americans a cut of AI profits.

  • Sam Altman met with Senator Bernie Sanders and Trump officials last week to pitch the plan, which OpenAI first floated in an April policy paper. Sanders earlier proposed a 50% one-time stock tax on labs.

  • Trump called it a "beautiful" partnership with the public. But a government that owns OpenAI, profits from it, and regulates it wears three hats at once. Former AI czar David Sacks calls it dangerous fusion.

🛡️ Trump orders military to accelerate AI use ↗️LINK

  • Trump issued a memo Friday directing the U.S. military and national security agencies to speed up their adoption of AI, while requiring safeguards for civil liberties and human oversight of autonomous weapon systems.

  • The memo orders an updated directive on autonomous weapons to reflect AI's fast-moving capabilities, and tells the Pentagon to adopt systems that respect the chain of command. It reaches defense, homeland security, the attorney general, and intelligence chiefs.

  • The push lands as some Pentagon contractors and military leaders ask for guardrails first. Trump wants speed and restraint at once, which tends to be the hardest combination to actually pull off.

📓 NotebookLM will now find your sources for you ↗️LINK

  • Google updated NotebookLM Monday, switching the default model to Gemini 3.5 and adding Antigravity-powered skills. You can now start a chat about a project, and the tool suggests sources using its research skills and Google Search.

  • This flips the old setup, which made you bring your own sources first. The feature can pull primary sources in other languages or surface related authors, and it shows its reasoning steps so you can check the output.

  • You can now give detailed formatting instructions and edit results, with exports to PDF, docx, CSV, Excel, PowerPoint, and Nano-banana images. Google starts the rollout with AI Ultra and Workspace customers, then everyone else eventually.

🔓 Hackers hijacked over 20,000 Instagram accounts ↗️LINK

  • Hackers likely took over 20,225 Instagram accounts by exploiting Meta's AI support chatbot. They simply asked it for a password reset on accounts lacking two-factor authentication, and the bug handed them the link.

  • A flaw in a separate code path skipped verifying that the requester's email matched the account. So the system mailed reset links to unassociated addresses instead of rejecting them. Meta surfaced the attack May 31st and resolved it June 1st.

  • Victims included Obama's old White House account, a Space Force chief master sergeant, and Sephora. Meta disabled the tool and forced security checkpoints, proving once again that "the AI worked as intended" rarely means what you hope.

⚖️ Sam Bankman-Fried files for a Trump pardon ↗️LINK

  • FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried has officially applied for a presidential pardon, according to the Justice Department's Pardon Attorney Office. He is serving 25 years after his 2024 conviction on fraud and money laundering charges.

  • Trump has pardoned hundreds during his second term. An NBC News analysis from January found more than half of his individual pardons went to white-collar offenders convicted of money laundering, bank fraud, and wire fraud.

  • Bloomberg notes that few of Trump's pardon recipients bothered filing the official application, and many had donated heavily to his campaigns. SBF chose the paperwork route, which suggests he lacks the other kind of access.
