Hand-picked news:

📱 New app pays users to record phone calls for AI ↗️LINK

  • What: Neon Mobile, now the No. 2 social app on Apple’s App Store, pays users up to $30 a day to record their phone calls and sells the audio to AI companies. The app claims to only record your side of the call, unless both people use Neon.

  • Why: The company says data helps train AI models. But its terms give Neon broad rights to sell and reuse recordings, raising fears of impersonation, fraud, and misuse. Experts warn users may be trading privacy for pennies.

  • Impact: The app’s sudden popularity shows how normalized AI data collection has become. But with little transparency on who buys the recordings, users could risk identity theft, scams, and long-term loss of control over their voices.

💻 Google teases Android for PCs with Qualcomm ↗️LINK

  • What: Google is working with Qualcomm to bring Android to PCs by merging it with ChromeOS. Qualcomm’s CEO says he’s already seen the system and called it “incredible.” The project will integrate Gemini AI, Android apps, and developer tools directly into desktop computing.

  • Why: Google wants a unified foundation for phones, PCs, and Chromebooks, creating one ecosystem across devices. Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon chips will power this effort, boosting performance and AI capabilities.

  • Impact: If successful, Android PCs could blur the line between mobile and desktop, expanding Google’s reach and challenging Windows in the laptop market.

⚡ Altman’s AI centers to use power of two major cities ↗️LINK

  • What: OpenAI, with Nvidia, plans new AI data centers that could use 10–17 gigawatts of electricity—about the same as powering New York City and San Diego together, or even whole countries like Switzerland and Portugal. Each site may cost $50B, adding up to $850B overall.

  • Why: Sam Altman says AI use is growing so fast that only massive new power supplies can keep up. He favors nuclear in the long run, but experts say new reactors won’t be ready soon. For now, the power will likely come from natural gas, wind, and solar.

  • Impact: By 2030, AI could use up to 12% of the world’s electricity, stressing grids, draining water for cooling, and harming local ecosystems. Experts warn the “clean AI” promises may not hold without big energy innovations.

🏥 Medicare to use AI to approve or deny care ↗️LINK

  • What: In 2026, Medicare will start a test program called WISeR in six states, using AI to help decide which treatments get approved. It will focus on services often flagged as wasteful, like skin and tissue substitutes, nerve stimulators, and some knee surgeries. The pilot runs until 2031.

  • Why: The government hopes AI will save money by reducing fraud and unnecessary care. But critics say it could copy the private insurance model, where prior authorization often causes long delays or outright denials.

  • Impact: Officials promise a human doctor will review all AI decisions, but experts fear financial incentives to cut costs could still deny seniors needed treatment, lowering trust in Medicare and risking patient health.

💼 Microsoft 365 Copilot adds Anthropic’s Claude ↗️LINK

  • What: Microsoft has added Anthropic’s Claude to 365 Copilot. Users can now toggle between OpenAI and Claude models, with a “Try Claude” button offering Claude Opus 4.1 for complex reasoning and Sonnet 4 for content-heavy tasks.

  • Why: The move gives users more flexibility and lets Copilot Studio creators mix and match models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and others in Azure’s catalog, tailoring AI to different needs.

  • Impact: Microsoft is making Office a multi-model AI hub, giving businesses more choice, reducing dependence on a single vendor, and fueling competition among top AI providers.
