Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On April 21, 1988, the Tandy Corporation held a press conference in New York to announce the Tandy 5000 MC, a $4,999 clone of IBM's PS/2 powered by an Intel 80386 chip. It was the first machine to take advantage of IBM's decision to license its MCA bus patents, a move IBM made after realizing 15 million ISA-based clones had already swamped its market. Within five years, IBM-compatible clones outsold genuine IBM machines, and IBM exited PC manufacturing entirely in 2005 by selling its PC division to Lenovo.

Free AI Browser
AI help, without the trust tax.
Most AI tools ask you to trade your data for intelligence. Norton Neo doesn't. It's the first safe AI-native browser built by Norton, and it gives you powerful built-in AI without handing your privacy over to get it. Search, summarize, and write with AI built directly into your browser. Your data stays yours. Your context stays private.
Built-in VPN, anti-fingerprinting, and ad blocking come standard. No add-ons. No setup. No compromises.
Fast. Safe. Intelligent. That's Neo.
Hand-picked news:
🍎 Tim Cook to step down as Apple CEO ↗️LINK
Apple announced Tim Cook will step down as CEO on September 1, with hardware engineering chief John Ternus taking over. Cook, who led Apple since 2011, will stay on as executive chairman.
Ternus has been at Apple since 2001 and led development of the iPad, AirPods, and the recently launched MacBook Neo. He takes over as Apple preps a long-delayed Siri overhaul and its first foldable iPhone.
Cook grew Apple into a $4 trillion company, but leaves with AI as his biggest unfinished business — a Siri update got delayed this year while ChatGPT and Gemini pulled further ahead.
💬 WhatsApp tests a paid subscription tier ↗️LINK
Meta is testing WhatsApp Plus, a paid subscription offering custom themes, ringtones, and up to 20 pinned chats instead of three. Pricing in early markets is around €2.49/month in Europe.
The plan is cosmetic-first and notably does not remove ads from the Status feature, which WhatsApp started running ads on last year. A one-month free trial is included in the test.
WhatsApp already crossed a $2 billion annualized revenue run-rate in Q4 2025 through business messaging, so this subscription is upside, not a lifeline, for Meta.
💰 Amazon will invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic ↗️LINK
Amazon is investing $5 billion in Anthropic upfront, with up to $20 billion more tied to performance milestones. This follows prior investments of $4 billion in 2023 and another $4 billion in 2024.
In return, Anthropic committed to spending over $100 billion on AWS over the next decade, using Amazon's Trainium chips for model training, and securing up to 5 gigawatts of chip capacity.
Claude is also coming directly into the AWS portal for enterprise customers, which tightens the loop between the two companies and makes switching cloud providers a much harder conversation for Anthropic.
🍽️ Yelp upgrades its AI assistant with bookings and delivery ↗️LINK
Yelp is relaunching its Assistant chatbot as a central app feature, letting users search, get recommendations, and complete bookings or orders in a single conversation across all categories.
The upgrade adds integrations with DoorDash, Grubhub, Zocdoc, and Vagaro, letting users order food, book medical appointments, and request local service quotes without leaving the app.
Yelp has 20+ years of user reviews sitting in its database, and this is its clearest attempt yet to turn that data into something that competes with AI-native discovery tools.
🔓 Vercel breached after an AI tool got unrestricted access ↗️LINK
Vercel confirmed a breach after an employee granted a third-party AI tool called Context .ai full OAuth access to their corporate Google Workspace account, letting attackers move laterally into internal systems.
The attacker, claiming to be ShinyHunters, is seeking $2 million for stolen data. Vercel says only non-sensitive environment variables were exposed, but is telling customers to rotate all API keys and credentials stored without sensitive designation.
Context .ai's own compromise may trace back to an employee downloading Roblox exploit scripts infected with Lumma Stealer malware, which is a reminder that your security is only as strong as your vendors' weakest habits.

Yesterday’s Poll Result:
Should Congress decide what age can use a computer?
A) Yes, kids need guardrails at the OS level - 18%
B) No, that's way beyond government's role - 82% 🏆
