☀️ On this day: On July 19, 1921, Rosalyn Sussman Yalow was born in the South Bronx, the daughter of parents who never finished high school. She took a teaching assistantship at the University of Illinois in 1941 as the only woman on a faculty of 400. She went on to co-develop radioimmunoassay and won the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the first American-born woman to do so, with a method sensitive enough to measure substances down to a billionth of a gram.

Indeed chief economist Svenja Gudell argued in Fortune that retiring Baby Boomers, not AI, pose the bigger threat. Her company's research projects the US workforce shrinks by 5.9 million by 2032.
Shortages will hit healthcare, construction, and skilled trades hardest, jobs that need people in the room. Hiring has cooled in software and marketing, the white-collar fields most exposed to AI.
Indeed's own report credits immigration policy changes alongside demographics for the decline. The op-ed skips that part, which makes retraining sound like the whole solution.
🍎 Apple wants to settle its monopoly case quietly ↗️LINK
Apple and the Justice Department opened early talks to settle the 2024 antitrust lawsuit, Bloomberg reported Friday. The DOJ and 15 states accused Apple of running an illegal smartphone monopoly.
The case targets five areas: super apps, cloud gaming, third-party messaging, smartwatches, and digital wallets. Stanley Woodward, who oversees DOJ antitrust work, favors settlements over litigation that drags on for years.
Apple already added RCS messaging and opened the iPhone's NFC chip to outside developers. Fixing the complaints before trial turns out to be a decent way to shrink the case.
🛰️ SpaceX in talks to rent AI computing to Pentagon ↗️LINK
SpaceX is negotiating with the Defense Department to rent out AI data center capacity worth billions of dollars, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing people familiar with the talks.
The Pentagon wants more cloud capacity for intelligence agencies and battlefield AI. SpaceX would lease computing power rather than sell hardware, and both sides could still walk away with nothing signed.
Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle already serve the Pentagon here. The rocket company now wants a piece too, months after landing similar deals with Google, Anthropic, and Reflection AI.
📱 DOJ lifts TikTok ban on federal work phones ↗️LINK
The Justice Department told federal agencies Friday that employees can install TikTok on government devices again, ending a ban Congress wrote into law in 2022 over national security concerns.
DOJ's Office of Legal Counsel says the law no longer bites because ByteDance handed U.S. operations and user data to TikTok USDS in January. American and global investors hold 80.1%, ByteDance keeps 19.9%.
DOJ says that leftover 19.9% "makes no practical difference." Congress spent four years treating any ByteDance stake as the whole problem, so agencies now get to decide for themselves.
🚗 Chip Motors launches a $15,000 electric car ↗️LINK
Miami startup Chip Motors opened preorders for Chip, a four-seat electric vehicle starting at $15,000 that talks, parks itself, and flashes moods through an animated LED grille.
Chip tops out at 25 mph, which keeps it in the federal low-speed category legal on roads posted 35 mph or under. A Chip Go service lets remote human operators handle parking and driving.
Wink already sells neighborhood EVs under $9,000, and GEM has made these since the 1990s. Chip's real innovation may be giving the golf cart a personality.

“This is less about quantifying numbers and more about a qualitative analysis. A visually impaired gains more independence using AI, and an employee loses his job due to AI. Both have their own impacts. One is largely positive, and the other is negative. For some, the magnitude of the first is greater than the second, while for others it is the opposite. For me, in my opinion, the first has a greater magnitude because an employee can choose to improve his skill set. He can choose to learn new things, but eyesight cannot be chosen willingly.”
