Hand-picked news:
⚙️ CrowdStrike cuts jobs, blames AI efficiency ↗️LINK
What: Cybersecurity giant CrowdStrike will cut 5% of its global workforce—around 500 jobs—citing AI-driven efficiencies, just months after causing a global IT meltdown with a faulty software update. CEO George Kurtz claimed AI is helping the company innovate faster and reduce hiring needs.
Why: Despite a 25% revenue increase, CrowdStrike reported a $92M loss and faces pressure to show AI's return on investment. Critics say the cuts reflect financial strain more than technological progress.
Impact: The move was branded "tone deaf" given the firm’s past outage. It underscores rising tensions over AI-led job losses and signals a broader trend of workforce reductions in tech.
🚫 Ireland to ban social media for under-16s ↗️LINK
What: Ireland is “very seriously” considering banning social media access for children under 16, following Australia's lead in proposing the world’s strictest digital age limit. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat would be required to enforce age checks or face hefty fines.
Why: The move responds to growing concerns over social media’s impact on youth mental health, online abuse, and crime. Deputy PM Simon Harris said the current self-regulation model is failing, despite Ireland’s existing digital age of consent being 16.
Impact: A ban could strain Ireland’s ties with the U.S., home to many tech giants headquartered in Dublin. But Ireland insists it won’t be pressured into sacrificing child safety for corporate interests.
💵 You can now submit your claims for Apple’s $95m ↗️LINK
What: Apple users in the U.S. can now submit claims in a $95 million class action settlement over Siri’s accidental recordings of private conversations from 2014 to 2024. The lawsuit alleged Apple violated privacy by sharing voice data with contractors without consent.
Why: After public backlash and legal pressure, Apple apologized and stopped storing Siri recordings but denied claims it let advertisers access the data. The settlement was finalized in January 2025 to resolve ongoing legal challenges.
Impact: Affected users can claim up to $20 per Siri-enabled device by July 2, 2025. The case underscores growing concerns around voice assistant privacy and corporate data practices.
💰 Meta in talks to use crypto for global payments ↗️LINK
What: Meta is in early talks with crypto firms to explore using stablecoins for international payments and small creator rewards, potentially through Instagram. These digital assets would offer price stability for cross-border financial transfers.
Why: Under new fintech-oriented leadership, Meta is re-entering the digital currency space after shelving its Diem project. Stablecoins could streamline global creator payouts and strengthen its financial infrastructure.
Impact: If implemented, Meta could become a major force in fintech, challenging traditional payment systems and signaling renewed tech interest in blockchain despite past regulatory hurdles.
🌊 Mexico sues Google over ‘Gulf of America’ rename ↗️LINK
What: Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Google for renaming the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America” on Google Maps for U.S. users. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the legal move after a U.S. House vote backed codifying the name change, initiated by Republicans.
Why: Mexico argues the name change misrepresents international waters and oversteps U.S. jurisdiction. Sheinbaum noted that even Trump’s original executive order only applied to the U.S. continental shelf, not the entire gulf.
Impact: The dispute escalates political tensions amid ongoing trade negotiations. It also raises broader concerns over digital map sovereignty and tech companies’ roles in geopolitical conflicts.

Yesterday’s Poll Result:
Is Bill Gates’ pledge to donate 99% of his fortune admirable?
A) Yes – It’s inspiring and meaningful - 66% 🏆
B) No – It’s more about legacy than real change - 34%
Reader’s opinion:
“Give me a break—anyone who’s saying Bill Gates isn’t working towards sustainable change has no clue what they’re talking about.”
“People act like Bill Gates is some selfless savior, but let’s really talk. Yes, he’s giving away billions — but in exchange, he gains global influence with zero accountability. The Gates Foundation is one of the largest funders of the World Health Organization, which means he gets a major seat at the table when it comes to vaccine policy, pandemic response, and global health decisions — decisions that affect millions of lives. He’s also been tied to controversial vaccine trials in places like India and Africa — where poor communities became testing grounds. In 2010, for example, the Gates-funded HPV trial in India faced accusations of unethical testing practices. Young girls were given shots without proper informed consent, and several deaths followed. The Indian government launched an investigation, and the case was even brought before Parliament. Let’s not forget his creepy connection to Jeffrey Epstein — which he lied about repeatedly before finally admitting he met with Epstein “several times” after Epstein’s conviction. Why does someone with Gates’ resources need to be around a known predator at all? And of course, all this “generosity” just so happens to come with huge tax breaks, allowing him to shelter wealth under the guise of philanthropy. This isn’t kindness. It’s control, PR, and reputation management.”
