Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On October 9, 2006, Google announced it would acquire YouTube for $1.65 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction, making the still-unprofitable startup by far the most expensive purchase in Google’s eight-year history. YouTube had just 67 employees, and its CEO Chad Hurley was 29. The deal turns 20 today, and YouTube made more than $60 billion in 2025, ahead of Netflix’s $45.18 billion.

Hand-picked news:
🤖 Anthropic bans cruel behavior toward Claude ↗️LINK
Anthropic updated its usage policy to ban “sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior” toward its AI models, with the new rules taking effect November 12 across Claude’s apps and API.
Anthropic says Claude’s ability to end abusive chats, which it added in 2025, remains the main enforcement tool. The policy never says “model welfare,” but CEO Dario Amodei has said he’s open to AI consciousness.
Not everyone agrees: Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman wrote last month that AIs don’t feel or suffer, and Pope Leo XIV suggested machines merely compile data. The rules arrived well before any consensus.
💼 Google launches Gemini Agent for businesses ↗️LINK
Google unveiled the Gemini agent, a single assistant that takes objectives instead of instructions, then plans the work, taps tools like Slack and Snowflake, and picks the best model, with Anthropic’s Claude as an option.
Businesses get it first. Nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 already use Gemini Enterprise, and Sundar Pichai says starting there lets Google solve harder security, scale, and performance problems before a consumer rollout.
The quirkiest part: Gemini can join teams as a “coworker agent” with its own email and calendar. Its actions log under its own name, not yours, so the new hire can take the blame.
📡 SpaceX plans to become a major mobile carrier ↗️LINK
SpaceX says it plans to turn Starlink Mobile into a major US carrier, buying 800 MHz spectrum licenses to compete with T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon once the FCC signs off on the deal.
The new 800 MHz airwaves, which SpaceX says reach inside buildings, stack on top of its EchoStar spectrum, and the FCC just cleared 15,000 next-gen satellites SpaceX claims carry 100 times more bandwidth.
Even after this deal, SpaceX trails badly on airwaves: New Street Research put the big three at about 1,020 MHz combined versus SpaceX’s 65 MHz. Satellites fix dead zones, but crowded cities run on capacity.
📵 Meta bans TikTok ads across seven countries ↗️LINK
Meta banned TikTok and ByteDance advertising across Facebook and Instagram in seven countries, including the US, and extended the restriction to third-party campaigns that direct users to TikTok.
The move follows TikTok's removal of dedicated Instagram profile links and its rejection of Meta ads demanding stronger child safety measures after Meta's $18 billion settlement with US states.
Meta argues it shouldn't help a rival pull users away. With TikTok already restricting Instagram links, the two platforms now compete over where users can even click.
📱 Apple cuts iPhone 18 Pro orders as demand slows ↗️LINK
Apple reportedly asked suppliers to cut October iPhone 18 Pro component orders by at least 15%, as weaker-than-expected demand follows the company's latest flagship price increases, according to Nikkei Asia.
Apple raised starting prices to $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max, citing AI-driven memory chip costs that have also pushed up prices across its product lineup.
Both Pro models still offer the same 12GB of RAM as last year's versions, despite the $100 increase. That's not exactly an easy upgrade pitch for price-conscious buyers.

Yesterday’s Poll Result:
Do you think restricting foreign talent will hurt America's tech industry?
A) Yes - 79% 🏆
B) No - 21%
Reader’s opinions:
“There's a reason why US companies look overseas for tech roles, and it's not because of spite against qualified American workers. This is particularly ironic considering the administration wants to plow full-steam ahead on AI...looks like Microsoft is being punished for not playing along with the agenda.”
“It most likely will. The US has a Major contribution of internationals”
