Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:

☀️ On this day: On April 12, 1976, Ronald Wayne (age 41), the third co-founder of Apple Computer, sold his 10% stake in the company for $800, just eleven days after Apple was established. Wayne chose to leave because the partnership agreement imposed unlimited personal liability on all co-founders, and unlike Jobs and Wozniak, he had personal assets that potential creditors could seize. With Apple's market cap now around $3.5 trillion, his theoretical 10% stake would be worth approximately $350 billion today.

Hand-picked news:

🤖 Claude overshadows ChatGPT ↗️LINK

  • At HumanX in San Francisco this week, vendors and panelists consistently named Claude as their go-to AI tool, while ChatGPT barely came up — one vendor flatly said OpenAI had "fallen off."

  • OpenAI's perception problem is self-inflicted: it scrapped Sora and a "sexy" ChatGPT pivot, drew bad press from a New Yorker profile on Sam Altman, and started running ads inside ChatGPT.

  • The Wall Street Journal called both companies the fastest-growing in tech history, so "falling off" for OpenAI just means it's no longer the only name in the room.

🎮 Rockstar Games got hacked again ↗️LINK

  • ShinyHunters breached Rockstar's Snowflake cloud storage by stealing authentication tokens from Anodot, a third-party analytics tool, letting them walk in as legitimate users and pull corporate data undetected.

  • Rockstar confirmed the breach but called the stolen data "non-material," suggesting no player info or active game development files were taken — likely corporate documents, financials, and marketing plans instead.

  • With GTA VI launching in a few months, any leaked marketing plans or budget details could fuel exactly the delay rumors Rockstar wants to avoid — and April 14 is very close.

📱 X launches XChat, a standalone encrypted messaging app ↗️LINK

  • XChat is a standalone messaging app for X users, launching April 17 with end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, screenshot blocking, and group chats of up to 481 people.

  • Musk first teased an upgraded DM feature in mid-2025, promising it to all X users by June — it's now April 2026 and arriving as a separate app instead, which tracks for his timeline record.

  • X promises no ads and no user tracking in the App Store listing, a notable pitch given how much of its parent platform runs on exactly those two things.

🕶️ Apple tests four smart glasses designs ↗️LINK

  • Apple is testing four frame styles for its upcoming smart glasses, ranging from Wayfarer-style rectangles to oval frames, in finishes like black, ocean blue, and light brown — with a launch targeted for spring or summer 2027.

  • The glasses are not AR. They pair with an iPhone to run cameras, mics, sensors, and AI features like Siri and visual intelligence, making them closer to AirPods and Apple Watch than anything from the Vision Pro line.

  • Apple used acetate instead of plastic for the frame material and is planning multiple colors at launch — the same playbook it ran with the Apple Watch in 2015, when design variety helped it reach buyers beyond the tech crowd.

🌕 Blue Origin extracts breathable oxygen from Moon dust ↗️LINK

  • Blue Origin's Air Pioneer reactor pulls oxygen from lunar soil using electric current, a world first that moves a permanent Moon base from science fiction to an engineering checklist item.

  • Nearly half of Moon dust is oxygen, but it's locked to metals like iron and titanium. Previous extraction attempts relied on lab equipment too bulky to launch — Air Pioneer is designed to be flight-ready.

  • NASA funded the reactor with $35 million and plans to land humans on the Moon in 2028. Bezos just handed the agency a plausible answer to one of lunar colonization's biggest unsolved problems.
