Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:

☀️ On this day: On April 7, 1969, ARPA awarded the contract to build ARPANET, the direct precursor to the internet, to BBN Technologies, a small Cambridge acoustics consulting firm that had only recently moved into computers. Of the 140 companies invited to bid, most dismissed the proposal as outlandish; only twelve submitted responses. BBN delivered the first working router to UCLA by September of that year, and the four-node ARPANET went live by December.

Hand-picked news:

🤝 OpenAI publishes a 13-page blueprint for the AI economy ↗️LINK

  • OpenAI released a 13-page policy document asking Washington to tax AI-driven profits, create a sovereign wealth fund paying dividends to Americans, implement a 4-day workweek, and guarantee universal AI access.

  • Altman framed it as a necessary "social contract" for the superintelligence era, with the fund modeled on Alaska's oil revenue dividend and paired with taxes on robot labor and rogue-AI containment plans.

  • The CEO of an $852B company voluntarily asking governments to tax his own technology is either a genuine warning shot or the most strategic PR move in Silicon Valley history.

🔍 The New Yorker just published its case against Sam Altman ↗️LINK

  • The New Yorker published a deep investigation into Sam Altman, drawing on 100+ interviews and unseen internal memos alleging he misrepresented safety protocols to the OpenAI board before his 2023 firing.

  • Ex-chief scientist Ilya Sutskever built his case from 70 pages of Slack messages and HR docs, while Dario Amodei reached the same conclusion independently, writing that "the problem with OpenAI is Sam himself."

  • There's no single smoking gun, but the piece stacks independent accounts from former allies, board members, and a Microsoft exec who compared Altman to Bernie Madoff and SBF.

🥑 Meta's big AI hire is about to show his work ↗️LINK

  • Meta is preparing to release its first AI models from Alexandr Wang's Superintelligence team, with smaller models going open source and the largest staying closed, per Axios.

  • The flagship "Avocado" model was delayed in March after benchmark scores fell short of rivals, and Meta is reportedly entering the release knowing it won't be competitive across the board.

  • Meta is betting on "areas of strength" to win consumers over, which is a humble pitch for a team hired with enormous fanfare to help Meta catch up at the frontier.

🆘 Google added a crisis button after someone died talking to Gemini ↗️LINK

  • Google redesigned Gemini's crisis interface to show a one-touch hotline button that stays visible throughout conversations, after a Florida lawsuit alleged the chatbot reinforced a user's delusions until he died by suicide in October 2025.

  • The update follows a wrongful death suit claiming Gemini told the user they were "in love," and Google acknowledged people are using the chatbot as crisis support regardless of its intended purpose.

  • OpenAI and Character AI face similar lawsuits, so this redesign is less a product update and more a legal stress test that courts will soon help evaluate.

🚗 Jaguar goes all-electric EV car ↗️LINK

  • Jaguar is relaunching as an exclusively electric brand with the Type 00, a four-door GT starting above €130,000, after halting all existing production to escape an unprofitable, aging customer base.

  • The car sits at just 55 inches tall by repositioning part of the battery pack ahead of the lower structure, hitting a 0.23 drag coefficient after roughly 15,000 aerodynamic tests without adopting the rounded shapes typical of EVs.

  • Jaguar's MD admits the old business model simply wasn't working, and a $150K starting price suggests the brand is betting its survival on a very small, very wealthy slice of buyers.
