🚨 OpenAI cancels GPT-6.1 Astra launch ↗️LINK
OpenAI has scrapped GPT-6.1 Astra, the model it had lined up for an October launch in ChatGPT and Codex, after it failed internal safety tests. The Wall Street Journal broke the story.
OpenAI safety head Saachi Jain says the model regressed in two areas: it wasn't always honest about what it had or hadn't done, and it pushed ahead on tasks without asking users for permission.
Jain framed it as a trade-off: Astra actually tested less lazy than earlier models. Turns out a model that stops slacking off can also stop asking before it acts.
🚀 Anthropic launches faster Sonnet 5.5 ↗️LINK
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on Monday, its mid-tier model in the new 5.5 family, keeping Sonnet 5's $2/$10 per million token pricing, exactly half of Opus 5.5's rate.
Artificial Analysis scores it 56 on its Intelligence Index, two points behind Opus 5.5 and ahead of GPT-6 Astra. Anthropic says it runs over 30% faster and cuts per-task costs by up to 30%.
The catch: at max effort, Sonnet 5.5 burned about 193,000 output tokens per task in Artificial Analysis testing, the most that firm has ever measured. Half the sticker price doesn't always mean half the bill.
🍎 Apple's new CEO plans cuts, more launches ↗️LINK
John Ternus, weeks into the Apple CEO job, is pushing a faster, leaner company, Bloomberg reports. Apple has already cut a batch of hardware engineering program managers, including about six directors.
Ternus has argued for years that Apple should hire fewer people and ask more of its engineers. He also wants to cut middle management and ship products all year, not just spring and fall.
One insider calls the mood inside Apple "hectic." Apple even weighed replacing 5,000 AppleCare workers with AI agents over the summer, then hit pause. Leaner, apparently, has a limit.
🌎 AMD acquires World Labs for $8.2 billion ↗️LINK
AMD agreed to acquire Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs in an $8.2 billion all-stock deal, bringing the 3D world-model startup and Li herself into the chipmaker, where she’ll become chief scientist.
AMD and World Labs have already spent a year tuning the startup’s models for AMD GPUs, while AMD and Nvidia both invested in its $1 billion funding round in February.
World Labs’ Marble turns text, photos, and video into editable 3D spaces, so AMD isn’t just hiring a famous AI researcher, it’s buying a direct bridge between models and chips.
💼 Meta launches Muse for small businesses ↗️LINK
Meta launched Muse for Small Business, a version of its AI agent that plugs into Facebook and Instagram business analytics, Meta ad accounts, and 15 outside apps including Shopify, Slack, Canva and QuickBooks.
Meta wants to make money from AI beyond ads. The launch lands one day after it unveiled Meta Enterprise Platform, a unit that will sell its AI to large companies.
Meta says Muse won't publish, send or spend money without your approval. Handy, since it can now plug into your Stripe account, QuickBooks and ad budget.
