Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On June 7, 1954, Alan Turing, the mathematician who helped crack Nazi Germany's Enigma code and laid the theoretical foundations of computer science, died at his home in Wilmslow, England, at age 41, from cyanide poisoning. Two years earlier he had been convicted of "gross indecency" for being gay and forced to undergo chemical castration as an alternative to prison. The British government issued a formal apology in 2009, and Queen Elizabeth II granted him a posthumous royal pardon in 2013.

Hand-picked news:
🚀 OpenAI plans a ChatGPT "super app" relaunch ↗️LINK
OpenAI plans to relaunch ChatGPT as a "super app" in the coming weeks, bundling coding tools and AI agents, according to the Financial Times. The aim is funneling free users toward paid products like Codex.
The strategy targets Anthropic, especially among business customers, and pushes OpenAI closer to profitability before an IPO. Product lead Thibault Sottiaux describes a personal agent that helps users across everything in their work and life.
These super app dreams have circulated since last year, and OpenAI now says it's dropping "side quests" like Sora. One senior employee flatly declared "Chat is dead," which is a bold thing to print on the chat company.
📉 S&P 500 says no to fast-tracking SpaceX ↗️LINK
S&P Dow Jones Indices ruled on June 4 that it won't waive its rules to fast-track SpaceX into the S&P 500. The decision also blocks a shortcut for OpenAI and Anthropic after their expected IPOs.
SpaceX wanted shorter waiting periods and waived profitability and share-availability rules, since it plans to float just 3% of shares and currently runs unprofitable with $29 billion in debt from its AI infrastructure spending.
The index kept every requirement in place, including the profitability screen. That last one stings, because SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic may all struggle to post consistent profits even after the standard yearlong wait.
🚨 Shooting survivor sues AI gun-detection company ↗️LINK
A survivor of the January 2025 shooting at Nashville's Antioch High School is suing Omnilert, the firm whose AI gun-detection system failed to spot the handgun that killed two people, including the shooter.
The lawsuit argues Omnilert knew its system had real limits tied to camera angle, lighting, and weapon visibility, yet marketed it without mentioning failures. Nashville schools approved a contract worth over $1 million for the tech in 2023.
A plaintiff's attorney compared trusting the system to trusting Tesla self-driving, calling both not ready for prime time. A security expert added that the money could have paid for a counselor instead.
🧮 150+ mathematicians sign declaration against AI hype ↗️LINK
Over 150 mathematics experts signed the Leiden Declaration on AI and Mathematics, warning governments not to "believe the hype" about AI solving complex math. The statement follows recent OpenAI claims that its models cracked decades-old Erdős problems.
The declaration says the tech industry has strong commercial reasons to overstate what its products do. Signatories warn that AI can generate plausible but incorrect proofs that researchers struggle to tell apart from genuine ones.
The mathematicians also flagged that AI trains on cutting-edge research without author consent. One signatory called it a serious problem, since math builds on prior work and a single bad proof can quietly poison everything after it.
💉 First AI-designed "universal vaccine" tested in humans ↗️LINK
University of Cambridge researchers ran the first human trial of a vaccine whose active ingredient was fully designed by AI. The goal is a "universal vaccine" protecting against many viruses, including SARS, MERS, and Covid-19.
The team trained a machine learning algorithm on genetic data from Sarbeco coronaviruses to design the antigen. Nearly 40 people joined the phase 1 trial between late 2021 and 2023, which mainly tests safety rather than effectiveness.
No serious side effects showed up, but the vaccine only had a "modest" effect on immune systems. AI may design the future of medicine, though for now this one still needs a phase 2 trial to prove itself.

Reader’s opinions:
“I can see the good, and its potential in helping to find missing persons, abducted people and major crime suspects. However, these functions will be turned on and used by the government. The question has to be asked what other ways will it be used to track and find people. The reminder of who a person is that we just run into out in the real world and who we slightly remember is both helpful. However, that usefulness though comes at a cost to our privacy.”
