Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On December 12, 1980, Apple Computer held its initial public offering (IPO) on the NASDAQ stock exchange. The company offered 4.6 million shares at $22 per share, and by the end of the day, the stock price had risen to $29 per share. This IPO was the most successful since Ford Motor Company's in 1956, and it made over 40 of Apple's employees and investors millionaires — including co-founder Steve Jobs, whose shares were valued at $217 million.

Hand-picked news:
⚔️ OpenAI fires back at Google with GPT-5.2 ↗️LINK
OpenAI launched GPT-5.2 as its most advanced model yet, offering three versions (Instant, Thinking, and Pro) aimed at developers and professional users, with major gains in coding, reasoning, long-context understanding, and tool use as it battles Google’s Gemini 3.
The release follows reports of an internal “code red” memo from CEO Sam Altman amid slowing ChatGPT growth, signaling a renewed push to reclaim leadership through stronger reasoning models and deeper enterprise and developer adoption.
While GPT-5.2 consolidates recent upgrades and tops many reasoning benchmarks, it comes with higher compute costs, raising questions about sustainability as OpenAI ramps up expensive infrastructure spending to keep pace with Google’s tightly integrated AI ecosystem.
🔍 EU investigates Google’s AI data practices ↗️LINK
European Union regulators have opened a new antitrust investigation into whether Google unfairly used web publisher content and YouTube videos to train its AI models and power search features like AI Overviews and AI Mode without proper payment or opt-out options.
The European Commission is examining whether this practice gave Google an unfair competitive advantage over rival AI developers by imposing unequal terms, granting itself privileged access to content, and potentially breaching long-standing EU competition rules.
Google denies wrongdoing, warning the probe could stifle innovation, while EU officials stress the investigation is nationality-agnostic and could lead to penalties of up to 10% of Google’s global annual revenue if violations are found.
🎬 Disney signs $1B OpenAI deal ↗️LINK
Disney has struck a landmark three-year, $1B partnership with OpenAI, becoming the first major studio to officially license its characters — from Frozen, Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar — for use in OpenAI’s generative video tool, Sora.
The deal allows fans to create custom short-form videos featuring Disney characters, with selected content set to stream on Disney+, while Disney also adopts OpenAI tools like ChatGPT internally to build new products and experiences.
Disney emphasized the agreement does not allow OpenAI to train its models on Disney IP and includes safeguards to protect creators, actors’ likenesses, and prevent harmful or illegal content, signaling a controlled “opt-in” approach to generative AI.
🏛️ Trump blocks state-level AI regulations ↗️LINK
President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at preventing U.S. states from enforcing their own AI laws, arguing that a single federal approach is needed to avoid fragmented and “onerous” regulations.
The move is a win for major tech companies, which say state-by-state rules could slow innovation and weaken the U.S. in its global AI race, though the White House says it will still allow regulations focused on children’s safety.
Critics, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and advocacy groups, argue the order undermines states’ rights and removes vital safeguards, especially as several states have already passed AI risk and accountability laws.
📹 Android users can now share live video during 911 calls ↗️LINK
Google is rolling out Android Emergency Live Video, letting 911 responders request and view a live camera feed to better assist callers during emergencies like medical crises, getting lost, or high-stress situations.
Video sharing is fully opt-in, encrypted by default, and can be stopped at any time, allowing responders to guide callers through steps such as CPR or first aid until help arrives.
The feature launches today in the U.S. on platforms including RapidSOS, Motorola Solutions, and Prepared911, and works on Android 8+ devices with Google Play services, similar to Apple’s Emergency SOS Live Video introduced in 2024.
