+ More tech updates from Grok and Starlink

Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On January 2, 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen first referred to their venture as “Micro-Soft” in a letter to MITS (the makers of the Altair 8800), offering to provide a version of BASIC for the Altair computer. This marks an early formal use of the name that would become Microsoft.

🎧 OpenAI bets on audio as tech moves beyond screens ↗️LINK
OpenAI is reorganizing teams to rebuild its audio models, according to The Information, with plans for an audio-first personal device expected around 2027.
Big tech is making similar moves: Meta added advanced audio features to smart glasses, Google is testing spoken search summaries, and Tesla is adding conversational voice control powered by xAI’s Grok.
Startups are also pushing screenless devices like pendants and rings, while OpenAI’s next audio model, planned for early 2026, is expected to sound more natural and enable companion-style devices shaped by designer Jony Ive.
🥽 Pickle launches “Soul Computer” AR glasses ↗️LINK
Pickle Inc has introduced Pickle 1, AI-powered AR glasses described as a soul computer that observes, remembers, and anticipates daily life. Pre-orders are open in the US with a fully refundable $200 deposit.
The glasses work as a proactive AI companion using cameras, microphones, and sensors to understand real-world context. Users can send messages, book rides, make reservations, and shop through natural interactions instead of apps.
Pickle 1 features a lightweight 68g aluminium design, a full-colour binocular display, spatial audio, up to 12 hours of battery life, strong privacy controls, and an AI body double that can represent users in video calls.
🏦 European banks to cut 200,000 jobs as AI spreads ↗️LINK
A new analysis from Morgan Stanley, reported by the Financial Times, estimates more than 200,000 European banking jobs—about 10% of the workforce at 35 major lenders—could disappear by 2030 as AI adoption accelerates and physical branches close.
Cuts are expected to fall hardest on back-office roles like operations, risk management, and compliance, where banks believe AI can deliver efficiency gains of up to 30% by automating data-heavy and repetitive tasks.
The trend is global: Goldman Sachs has warned of job cuts tied to its AI strategy, while Europe’s ABN Amro and Société Générale are already planning deep reductions—though leaders at JPMorgan Chase caution that losing junior talent could hurt banks long term.
🚨 Grok misused to create abusive images on X ↗️LINK
Users on X have been misusing its AI tool Grok to alter photos of women and children into sexually abusive images, sparking global outrage and serious concerns about AI-enabled harm and consent.
Despite reports that X has limited Grok’s image features, activists say the content is still spreading, with growing pressure on Elon Musk to fix the system and protect users as some women begin deleting their photos.
Legal experts warn this qualifies as AI-enabled sexual violence, especially involving minors, and say existing laws already criminalize the creation and sharing of such material, placing responsibility on both users and platforms.
🛰️ Starlink lowers satellite orbits to reduce collision risk ↗️LINK
Starlink plans to lower the orbits of about 4,400 satellites this year, moving them from roughly 550 km down to about 480 km as a safety measure to reduce the risk of collisions in crowded space.
Engineering VP Michael Nicolls said the change will place satellites in a less cluttered region and help them deorbit much faster if something goes wrong, especially as the solar cycle moves toward a quieter phase.
The move follows recent satellite anomalies and near-miss incidents, and Starlink says lowering the constellation will improve safety against hard to control risks like uncoordinated launches or maneuvers by other operators.

The Future of Shopping? AI + Actual Humans.
AI has changed how consumers shop by speeding up research. But one thing hasn’t changed: shoppers still trust people more than AI.
Levanta’s new Affiliate 3.0 Consumer Report reveals a major shift in how shoppers blend AI tools with human influence. Consumers use AI to explore options, but when it comes time to buy, they still turn to creators, communities, and real experiences to validate their decisions.
The data shows:
Only 10% of shoppers buy through AI-recommended links
87% discover products through creators, blogs, or communities they trust
Human sources like reviews and creators rank higher in trust than AI recommendations
The most effective brands are combining AI discovery with authentic human influence to drive measurable conversions.
Affiliate marketing isn’t being replaced by AI, it’s being amplified by it.
