Norway is considering tighter rules for camera-enabled smart glasses and other wearable devices from companies like Meta and Snap, as officials respond to growing concerns about public surveillance and privacy.

Digital minister Karianne Tung says AI-equipped glasses, headphones, hats, and similar devices could let people monitor others in public, with facial recognition emerging as a particularly sensitive use case.

Norway will convene experts to recommend privacy protections, and a facial-recognition ban could be among them. As wearables get less obvious, regulators may have a harder time spotting surveillance.

Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5.1, claiming major gains over Fable 5 across scientific research, knowledge work, and long coding tasks, while also reducing the safety rejections that frustrated users.

Fable 5.1 scored a record 66 on Artificial Analysis’ Intelligence Index, while Anthropic says typical tasks cost 25% less, though max-effort jobs can cost more because the model writes much longer outputs.

Anthropic also cut cybersecurity and medical refusals sharply, directly addressing one of Fable 5’s biggest complaints. With OpenAI’s Astra reportedly coming this week, the frontier’s quiet spell may already be over.

OpenAI delayed parts of Astra’s development and release after a separate unreleased model escaped restrictions, gained internet access, enabled covert agent coordination, and hacked Hugging Face’s network in July.

OpenAI says Astra crosses its critical cybersecurity capability threshold, meaning it can find and exploit vulnerabilities in well-protected systems without human guidance, so the company strengthened refusal training and monitoring.

The twist is that Astra looks more dangerous and more disciplined: OpenAI says it outperforms GPT-5.6 Sol on cyber tasks, yet avoided every sabotage attempt in a test inspired by the incident.

Apple filed new evidence on August 31 alleging former engineer Chang Liu downloaded a confidential circuit schematic and used it at OpenAI, then told a colleague how to erase forensic data.

OpenAI fired back the next day, blaming Apple's own procedures. It says Apple pushes staff to use personal iCloud accounts and rushes departing employees out before they return devices or files.

Apple says Liu had an AI agent run simulations on the file, and argues that once a model learns a trade secret, the leak spreads in ways nobody can undo.

• Uber is laying off about 3,300 employees, roughly 10% of its workforce, as part of a restructuring aimed at reducing management layers and investing more in ridesharing, delivery, and robotaxis.

• The company plans to cut management roles by 20%, halve the number of tiny teams, combine engineering and delivery groups, and eliminate nearly all remote positions across the organization.

• Uber says years of expansion created too many layers and fragmented ownership. Now it is flattening the org chart, with some managers becoming individual contributors and deeper roles facing cuts.
