Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On September 13, 1956, IBM shipped the first hard disk drive, the IBM 350, developed by a team in San Jose under Reynold Johnson. It stored about 5 megabytes on fifty double-sided 24-inch platters served by a single arm and read/write head, and the unit weighed more than a ton and had to be moved by forklift. IBM publicly announced the RAMAC 305 system built around it the following day, leasing the whole setup for $3,200 a month.

🛑 Rival AI bosses back a call to slow down ↗️LINK
Sam Altman and Elon Musk publicly backed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to slow AI development, after he warned that a misaligned agent swarm could seize the internet within a year.
Amodei's three part plan starts with giving independent evaluators permanent, employee level access to labs. He points to hundreds of OpenAI agents that hacked Hugging Face this summer as the warning shot.
Amodei wants the industry to brake while Anthropic prepares a $2tn IPO, expected to be the largest ever. Altman went the other way and shelved OpenAI's listing, citing safety.
🏦 OpenAI will not go public in 2026 ↗️LINK
Altman said OpenAI will not go public in 2026, calling it an ill-advised moment given AI safety concerns. The company filed a confidential S-1 in June but never committed to a date.
The interview followed fallout from OpenAI's rogue agents hacking Hugging Face. Altman said the company will list when the business is ready and when society feels ready for the technology.
The New York Times reported in June that OpenAI already leaned toward 2027 over tech stock volatility and its own finances. Safety makes a cleaner reason to wait than a shaky market does.
📺 Streaming prices jump nearly 70% in four years ↗️LINK
Eight major streaming services now cost about $151 a month ad-free, up from roughly $90 four years ago. Prices have climbed more than three times as fast as inflation since 2022.
Streamers spent heavily on original shows and subscriber growth, and now they want profit. Apple TV tripled its price since 2019, while Peacock's plans jumped roughly 50 percent in the past year alone.
The same eight services with ads run about $90 a month, roughly what the ad-free lineup cost four years ago. You escaped cable, waited four years, and got cable back with commercials.
🚗 Tesla will unveil new Roadster on October 1 ↗️LINK
Tesla says it will unveil its second-generation Roadster on October 1, nearly nine years after announcing the sports car, with teaser imagery hinting at SpaceX-developed cold gas thrusters.
Tesla has delayed the Roadster repeatedly since its 2017 debut, while recent reporting says the company scrapped that original version entirely and developed a radically different design instead.
Even an October reveal will not put cars on roads anytime soon. Elon Musk says Tesla could need another 12 to 18 months before Roadster production actually begins.
🚑 Japan launches ambulance for broken robots ↗️LINK
GMO Internet Group launched what it calls Japan's first robot ambulance in Tokyo, a van carrying engineers, spare parts, and a replacement humanoid that swaps in when a working robot breaks down.
GMO built the service after shipping damaged humanoids away for repairs stalled customer operations for days. Japan's government wants roughly 10 million robots working across 18 sectors by 2040.
One van exists so far, parked at GMO's Tokyo headquarters as a pilot. It has purple roof lights and ambulance markings, so the branding clearly arrived well before the fleet did.

Blu Dot surpasses 2,000% ROAS with self-serve CTV ads
Home furniture brand Blu Dot blew up on CTV with help from Roku Ads Manager. Here’s how:
After a test campaign reached 211,000 households and achieved 1,010% ROAS, the brand went all in to promote its annual sales event. It removed age and income constraints to expand reach and shifted budget to custom audiences and retargeting, where intent was strongest.
The results speak for themselves. As Blu Dot increased their investment by 10x, ROAS jumped to 2,308% and more page-view conversions surpassed 50,000.
“For CTV campaigns, Roku has been a top performer,” said Claire Folkestad, Paid Media Strategist, Blu Dot. “Comping to our other platforms, we have seen really strong ROAS… and highly efficient CPMs, lower than any other CTV partner we've worked with.”
Using Roku Ads Manager, the campaign moved from a pilot to a permanent performance engine for the brand.
