Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On April 6, 1965, Intelsat I, nicknamed "Early Bird," became the first commercial communications satellite placed in geosynchronous orbit. Weighing just 85 pounds, it could handle 240 two-way telephone circuits or one TV channel, and was originally designed to operate for only 18 months. It was briefly recalled from reserve status in June 1969 when the Atlantic Intelsat satellite failed, helping carry the Apollo 11 broadcast to viewers around the world.

Hand-picked news:
🎯 Iran threatens to destroy OpenAI’s $30B data center ↗️LINK
Iran's IRGC posted a video threatening to destroy U.S. and Israeli energy and tech infrastructure in the region, singling out the Stargate AI data center in Abu Dhabi by name, with satellite footage to match.
The threat follows reported rocket strikes on Amazon AWS data centers severe enough to force shutdowns, and comes as the U.S. has threatened action against Iran's power plant facilities.
The IRGC's video called out the data center as "hidden" on Google Maps, then showed night-vision imagery of it anyway — a flex that doubles as a message to anyone building critical AI infrastructure in the Gulf.
🖥️ Anthropic just told third-party agents to pay up or leave ↗️LINK
Anthropic cut off third-party agent platforms like OpenClaw from running on flat-rate Claude plans, requiring them to pay via API keys or usage add-ons, citing unsustainable demand from nonstop agent-driven requests.
The company is softening the blow with a month of credits, up to 30% discounts on add-ons, and refunds for users who cancel, while framing the move as necessary for long-term service stability.
OpenClaw's creator called it a pattern of copying popular features then locking out open source, and with OpenAI ready to absorb displaced power users, the timing is rough for Anthropic's goodwill.
🚀 Artemis II enters lunar gravity ahead of its Moon flyby ↗️LINK
The Artemis II crew of four entered the Moon's gravitational sphere of influence four days into their mission, with their lunar flyby scheduled for today — the first humans this deep in space since Apollo 17 in 1972.
At their farthest point, the crew will be 252,757 miles from Earth, breaking the Apollo 13 distance record by just over 4,000 miles, before looping behind the Moon and briefly losing contact with Earth.
During the flyby, the crew will watch the Sun disappear behind the Moon for about an hour — a solar eclipse that no human has ever had a front-row seat to before.
🎬 Netflix open-sources a video editor that rewrites physics ↗️LINK
Netflix released VOID, an open-source tool that removes objects from video while recalculating the physical effects of that removal across the rest of the scene, not just painting over what's gone.
VOID uses a three-part mask to identify what to erase, what's physically affected, and what to leave alone, then runs a judge model to map out cause-and-effect across the full scene.
In head-to-head tests against six tools including Runway, evaluators preferred VOID's results roughly two-thirds of the time, and this is Netflix Research's first public AI release.
🌕 Japan proposes a solar panel ring around the Moon ↗️LINK
Japan’s Shimizu Corporation proposed wrapping a 6,800-mile belt of solar panels around the Moon's equator, beaming power to Earth via microwave and laser, with enough output to theoretically replace all fossil fuel use.
The lunar equator gets uninterrupted sunlight with no atmosphere or weather interference, making it roughly 20 times more productive than equivalent Earth-based arrays, and robots would build it using materials mined from the Moon itself.
The proposal has been on Shimizu's website since before Fukushima, the company has no funding, no agency backing, and no cost estimate — but they're very confident about the sunlight.
