Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:

☀️ On this day: On November 2, 1936, the BBC launched the world's first regular high-definition television service from Alexandra Palace in London. The broadcasts alternated between John Logie Baird's 240-line mechanical system and Marconi-EMI's 405-line electronic system, with the mechanical system abandoned just three months later. Television broadcasting celebrates its 90th anniversary today.

Hand-picked news:

📉 Intel stock crashes 28%, costing government $12B ↗️LINK

  • Intel’s stock crashed 28.6% on Friday after a weak fourth-quarter forecast, wiping roughly $12 billion off the U.S. government’s 10% stake on paper, according to CNBC.

  • Intel expects $15 billion to $16 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, below the $17 billion analysts wanted, as AI’s hunger for memory chips pushes up PC prices and drags down demand.

  • The twist: AI also powers Intel’s best business, with data center revenue up 78% to $7.3 billion. The same boom lifting its servers is crushing its PCs.

💳 ChatGPT limits paid accounts per device ↗️LINK

  • OpenAI now caps how many paid ChatGPT accounts can share one device or payment card. Users who hit the cap see “Device limit reached” and can’t use that paid account there.

  • OpenAI calls the limits a security measure covering Go, Plus and all three Pro tiers. The Decoder says they target users juggling cheap subscriptions for extra usage, nudging them toward pricier credits and usage resets.

  • The catch: OpenAI won’t say how many accounts trigger the cap, and logging out doesn’t free a slot. Even families sharing one card can trip it, per OpenAI’s help page.

🎮 Claude blocks recreating existing video games ↗️LINK

  • Anthropic added a rule to Claude Code that stops it from recreating a specific existing video game, even if users rename it or call it original. Original and genre games still work.

  • Anthropic’s Addy Osmani said the company added the two-sentence rule because using Claude to infringe IP breaks its usage policy. It follows a wave of AI-assisted clones and browser ports of popular games.

  • Anthropic has reasons to tread carefully on IP. It agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement with authors last year, and Elvis Presley’s rights holders sued it in October over 274 songs.

🏗️ OpenAI plans data center rebrand ↗️LINK

  • OpenAI plans to promote its data centers as “AI compute campuses” in a post-election policy campaign, as opposition to new facilities intensifies across U.S. communities.

  • The company also plans to propose AI safety “speed limits,” community agreements, and state legislation giving residents more say in projects, while pushing for U.S. influence on global standards.

  • Calling them campuses might sound friendlier, but OpenAI still needs to win over skeptical neighbors. Its strongest selling point may be an Ohio project promising thousands of jobs.

🔭 NASA asks companies to help save Hubble ↗️LINK

  • NASA is asking commercial space companies for ideas to boost Hubble’s orbit and extend its mission, as the aging telescope faces a potential atmospheric reentry in the early-to-mid 2030s.

  • NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman says the agency wants innovative, cost-effective solutions that preserve Hubble’s scientific output. Companies can submit proposals through November 30 at 3 p.m. ET.

  • Hubble has spent more than three decades studying the universe. Now, keeping it alive could come down to a decidedly less glamorous feat: moving the telescope a little farther from Earth.

Yesterday’s Poll Result:

Do you think AI will rewrite parts of human history?

  • A) Yes - 73% 🏆

  • B) No - 27%

Reader’s opinions:

❝

“Over the past 2 decades I have watched how machines have sped up scientific processes, by doing different variations of experiments at speeds that humans cannot match. AI can scan pieces in museum collections and connect the dots faster than humans can. That they find connections that rewrite human history is quite possible. It just needs to be verified by humans to ensure that it's real and not a hallunication is very necessary.”
