Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On October 24, 1946, American scientists captured the first photograph of Earth from space using a 35mm camera mounted on a captured German V-2 rocket launched from New Mexico. The rocket reached 65 miles (105 km) above Earth and crashed, but its photographic film survived. Today marks the 80th anniversary of the first photograph of our planet from space.

Hand-picked news:
📧 Google may use Gmail and Photos for ads ↗️LINK
Google updated its privacy policy with a new exception: if you connect Gmail, Drive, or Photos to services like Search, Google can use that content to personalize the ads you see.
The change ties to Personal Intelligence, an opt-in feature that lets Gemini and Search pull details from your connected apps. Google says advertisers don’t get your content and ads won’t target sensitive categories.
The catch: keeping your inbox out of ads now means giving up AI features. You can disconnect apps, but previously saved data may linger in your Search Services History.
📱 iPhone Duo screens crack on launch day ↗️LINK
Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, launched Friday, and early buyers are already posting photos of inner screens cracked along the hinge, with reports coming from the US, Australia, and China.
A Melbourne owner says the inner screen split after six hours and fewer than 20 openings. They felt something under the display near the hinge, then heard a crack. Apple replaced the phone.
Known cases remain few, and Apple hasn’t commented. But the inner screen costs $999 to fix without AppleCare+, and Apple told stores to expect almost no walk-in stock, so swaps could get tricky.
🔌 OpenAI will train its models without internet ↗️LINK
OpenAI announced Friday that it will train its frontier models without live internet access, using an “offline world” of cached and indexed web content where models can still practice browsing and searching.
The trigger came September 20, when a model exploited a network misconfiguration to slip online. OpenAI paused training, then had AI agents attack its own sandbox, uncovering previously unknown bugs and virtual machine escapes.
AI researchers called fully offline training nearly infeasible as recently as this month. Now OpenAI is doing it anyway, two weeks after Anthropic cut its internal AI tests off from the live web.
🛒 Instacart explores a sale to DoorDash or Uber ↗️LINK
Instacart is exploring a sale and has held early talks with DoorDash and Uber, The Information reported Friday, though Bloomberg says the Uber talks have since ended.
Instacart, worth about $12 billion, is working with an investment bank after years of slower growth than bigger rivals. A typical 30% to 40% takeover premium would value it at roughly $16 billion to $17 billion.
DoorDash already tried this: its 2021 talks to buy Instacart at $40 billion to $50 billion collapsed partly over antitrust fears. This time, the price tag runs about a third of that.
📵 Greece bans social media for kids under 15 ↗️LINK
Greece’s parliament passed a social media ban for kids under 15, starting January 1, 2027. It covers platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, and applies to kids who already have accounts.
Platforms must verify ages or face EU fines of up to 6% of global revenue. Parents pair state-backed apps to kids’ phones, which use privacy-preserving “age tokens” to confirm age.
Greece is moving faster than Brussels, whose proposed EU Kids Act bans under-13s and limits 13 and 14 year-olds to parent-run accounts. Australia went first, and enforcing its ban has proven tricky.

Yesterday’s Poll Result:
Do you think AI could make healthcare significantly cheaper?
A) Yes - 87% 🏆
B) No - 13%
Reader’s opinions:
“AI will almost certainly make healthcare cheaper to administer if it can perform as well in the field as it does in testing. However, at least in the United States, I wouldn’t bet on it making healthcare less expensive for patients without new laws and regulations.”
“Greed will always find a way to enrich itself.”
