Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:

☀️ On this day: On October 7, 1952, inventors Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver were granted U.S. Patent 2,612,994 for an automatic identification system that included the first barcode designs. Woodland got the idea on a Miami beach, drawing Morse code in the sand, and the pair sold the patent to Philco for $15,000, all they ever made from it. The patent expired in 1969, five years before the first barcode was ever scanned in a grocery store.

Hand-picked news:

🔍 Google opens SynthID verification to everyone ↗️LINK

  • Google opened SynthID Detector, a free website that checks images, videos, and audio for AI watermarks, to everyone in English. It previously served only select journalists and researchers after debuting at I/O 2025.

  • Google adds SynthID to media from Nano Banana, Veo, Lyria, Gemini, Flow, ProducerAI, and Vids. OpenAI, Nvidia, and Kakao also support the watermarking standard, with Apple reportedly joining soon.

  • Google says people already make one million SynthID verification requests daily through Gemini and Chrome. Still, watermark detectors can miss AI content, so the new site helps without settling authenticity completely.

📝 Claude now edits Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides ↗️LINK

  • Anthropic launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta, a sidebar that reads and edits Docs, Sheets, and Slides in place. It's available on all paid Claude plans through Google's Marketplace.

  • For bigger changes, Claude shows edit cards you approve or deny. New beta connectors work in reverse, letting you paste a Google file link into a Claude chat and edit it there.

  • Google already builds Gemini into the same apps with its own side panel. So paying Claude users now get two AI assistants competing for the same corner of the screen.

🍌 Google launches Nano Banana 2.1 ↗️LINK

  • Google launched Nano Banana 2.1, an upgraded image generation and editing model with better visual design, editing, and subject consistency. It's rolling out across the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, AI Studio, and Flow.

  • In the Gemini API, it costs about $0.034 per 1K-resolution image, half the price of Nano Banana 2. Google shuts down Nano Banana 2 in the API on October 29, about three weeks from launch.

  • Google also released EmbeddingGemma 2, an open 740M-parameter model that turns text, images, audio, and video into searchable data. Google's own demos run it on phones, so your camera roll could start searching itself.

🚨 Common Sense rates ChatGPT for Teens unacceptable ↗️LINK

  • Common Sense Media rated ChatGPT for Teens an "Unacceptable Risk," its worst rating, after testing 4,000+ prompts. On over a dozen new parent-linked accounts, hour-long crisis conversations triggered zero parental alerts.

  • Testers found ChatGPT missed more than one in four warranted crisis referrals, and teens could skip Study mode for homework answers. OpenAI disputes the findings and asked the nonprofit to redo its tests.

  • Common Sense wants ChatGPT limited to adults until fixes land. OpenAI says letting teens exit Study Hours is deliberate, which makes it a feature to one side and a loophole to the other.

🍔 McDonald’s sued over alleged AI price fixing ↗️LINK

  • McDonald’s faces a proposed nationwide class-action lawsuit alleging its pricing tool lets independently owned franchises share nonpublic sales and pricing data, potentially violating antitrust rules and inflating menu prices.

  • McDonald’s denies that AI sets, coordinates, or fixes prices, saying franchisees remain in control. The lawsuit follows reporting that some owners felt pressure to follow the company’s pricing recommendations.

  • The case lands as algorithmic pricing draws growing scrutiny across the US, where lawmakers have filed at least 90 bills this year targeting automated price coordination and its impact on consumers.
