Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On June 10, 2003, Microsoft announced it was acquiring the antivirus technology and engineering team behind RAV AntiVirus from GeCAD Software, a Bucharest company that had grown to over 10 million users in 60 countries. Microsoft kept the talent but quietly killed RAV as a standalone product, including its popular Linux and email-server versions. That Romanian technology became the seed of Microsoft's security push, leading through Windows Live OneCare and Security Essentials to today's Microsoft Defender.

Hand-picked news:
💸 Google cuts AI Plus to $4.99 with double storage ↗️LINK
Google cut its AI Plus subscription from $7.99 to $4.99 a month while doubling the included storage to 400 gigabytes. The plan launched in January as the cheapest paid AI tier in the US, aimed at students and individuals.
A sub-$5 price war has run for nearly a year in markets like India, where OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go around $4.60 last August and Google followed in December. Monday's move brings that same undercut-and-bundle logic to American consumers.
One VC frames this as the start of an AI commoditization era that erodes margins for pure-play providers. With OpenAI and Anthropic both filing confidentially to go public, the timing tests their premium valuations.
🤖 NVIDIA and LG build AI factory for robots ↗️LINK
NVIDIA and South Korea's LG Group launched a broad partnership to build a connected AI ecosystem spanning factory floors, home robots, autonomous vehicles, and data centers. They want to shorten the path from AI experiments to commercial deployment.
LG will train home robots inside virtual environments using NVIDIA Isaac Sim and Isaac Lab, and build a "physical AI data factory" that generates synthetic training data with NVIDIA Cosmos world models to solve robotics' data shortage.
The deal reaches deep into infrastructure too, covering liquid cooling, large-scale data centers, and 800-volt power tech. LG is essentially wiring NVIDIA into nearly every division it runs, from cars to cooling.
🎨 Canva adds offline mode with auto-sync ↗️LINK
Canva rolled out an offline mode that lets users design for up to 14 days without internet. You pre-save files through a "Make available offline" option, with no extra downloads or subscriptions required.
Any edits you make offline sync back automatically once you reconnect. Canva aimed the feature at students, creators, and professionals in low-connectivity regions, with India a major focus.
Canva also launched Learn Grid, a free AI education hub for teachers covering 16+ languages. Users had requested offline mode for years, so your designs no longer need a Wi-Fi babysitter.
🗣️ Google launches Gemini 3.5 Live Translate ↗️LINK
Google launched Gemini 3.5 Live Translate, a speech-to-speech model that detects and translates over 70 languages in near real time, following a few seconds behind the speaker while matching their intonation, pacing, and pitch.
Developers get a public preview in the Gemini Live API and AI Studio, select enterprise customers get it in Google Meet this month, and the Translate app gets it soon.
A new Android "listening mode" drops the earbuds entirely, letting you hold the phone to your ear like a call. Every audio stream also carries a SynthID watermark Google says you can't currently remove.
🌐 New York law requires labeling AI performers in ads ↗️LINK
A new New York law took effect Tuesday requiring ads to clearly label any AI-generated "synthetic performer" used in place of a real actor. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed it in December and calls it first-in-the-nation.
The law covers ads in any medium and fines violators $1,000 for a first offense and $5,000 after that. It carves out movies, TV, streaming, video games, audio ads, and AI used only for translation.
SAG-AFTRA backed the law, while ad agencies fought it as a compliance headache. Days after Hochul signed it, Trump issued an executive order pressuring states not to regulate AI at all.
