Hand-picked news:

🌐 Google brings more agentic AI to Chrome ↗️LINK

  • Google announced a new wave of AI upgrades for Chrome, introducing agentic browsing, built-in image generation, and deeper Gemini-powered features across the browser.

  • A new Auto Browse mode can control a Chrome tab to complete tasks on websites while pausing for sensitive actions, and Gemini now appears in a persistent sidebar for asking questions, comparing products across tabs, and connecting with Gmail and Calendar.

  • Chrome is adding built-in image transformation through Nano Banana, allowing users to edit or reimagine images directly in the browser via prompts, with no downloading, copy-pasting, or extra tabs required.

📉 Amazon confirms 16,000 job cuts ↗️LINK

  • Amazon confirmed it will cut 16,000 jobs globally after an internal email about the layoffs was accidentally sent to employees before being quickly canceled.

  • The cuts are part of a broader effort to reduce bureaucracy and costs, following 14,000 corporate layoffs announced in October, with executives saying this should mark the peak of reductions.

  • While Amazon still employs about 1.5 million people worldwide, the company is tightening operations, enforcing full-time office work, cutting expenses, and reshaping parts of the business, including closing its remaining Amazon-branded grocery stores.

💬 WhatsApp starts charging AI chatbots in Italy ↗️LINK

  • Meta has introduced a new billing model for AI chatbots on WhatsApp in Italy, charging developers $0.0691 per AI-generated response starting February 16, a cost that could quickly add up for high-traffic bots.

  • Italy became a test case after its competition authority forced Meta to lift a chatbot ban imposed in January, which Meta said was necessary because third-party AI assistants strained WhatsApp beyond its intended system limits.

  • Meta claims the fees apply only where regulators legally require chatbot access, but the move sets a clear precedent that could shape how AI bots are monetized in other regions pushing back on platform restrictions.

📉 YouTube finally removes top AI content farms ↗️LINK

  • YouTube abruptly removed two massive AI-driven channels, CuentosFacianantes and Imperio de Jesus, which together had nearly six million subscribers, after Kapwing flagged them as low-quality, mass-produced “AI slop” designed to game the algorithm.

  • CEO Neal Mohan has pledged to crack down on low-effort AI spam without blocking innovation, signaling that YouTube will use existing moderation tools to enforce quality standards rather than banning AI content outright.

  • The purge goes beyond just two channels, with at least sixteen more AI content farms now gone or inactive, representing billions of views and highlighting how widespread low-effort AI content had become on the platform.

🚗 Tesla is killing off the Model S and Model X ↗️LINK

  • Tesla will stop making the Model S and Model X next quarter, with Elon Musk saying the company is moving on to focus on autonomy and robots, while continuing to support existing owners.

  • The Model S was a breakthrough car that helped make electric vehicles mainstream, while the Model X stood out for its Falcon Wing doors but struggled with complexity and production issues.

  • Sales of both models have slowed as cheaper Model 3 and Model Y vehicles took over, competition increased, and Tesla shifted its long-term vision away from traditional cars and toward AI-driven technology.
