Hand-picked news:
🌍 EU puts ChatGPT under tougher rules ↗️LINK
The European Commission classified ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine under the Digital Services Act, putting OpenAI under stricter rules governing illegal content, minors, mental health, and platform risks.
ChatGPT crossed the DSA’s 45 million monthly EU user threshold, triggering requirements around risk mitigation, algorithm transparency, and advertising. OpenAI has until the end of December 2026 to comply.
Reddit and Roblox received similar designations, so ChatGPT has company. The EU increasingly treats widely used AI services like major internet platforms rather than experimental software operating outside traditional platform rules.
📸 Instagram wants AI people to say they're AI ↗️LINK
Instagram will rename its “AI creator” tag to “AI-generated profile,” making it clearer when an account features a synthetic person rather than a real human behind the profile.
Instagram will identify accounts that fail to label AI-generated personas and limit their reach, blocking recommendations to non-followers in Reels and Explore while allowing owners to appeal mistakes.
The policy targets fake people, not AI-made posts generally. So Instagram still won’t filter out every piece of AI content, but synthetic influencers now have fewer places to hide.
🖥️ AI labs are buying tens of thousands of Macs ↗️LINK
OpenAI and rival AI labs bought tens of thousands of Mac minis and Mac Studios to train computer-use agents, per The Information, and Apple answered by refreshing both desktops on August 25.
Agent training needs thousands of separate machines running a real operating system rather than one giant GPU cluster, and Apple's unified memory pools RAM across the chip. Anthropic reportedly rents Mac capacity through AWS.
Apple reportedly had no enterprise AI strategy and turned away businesses asking to buy Private Cloud Compute access. Now memory shortages keep high end Macs scarce, and some buyers just order Nvidia's DGX Spark.
🚗 Tesla teases Grok Bot integration for its cars ↗️LINK
Tesla appears to be preparing in-car support for Grok Bot, SpaceXAI’s autonomous agent platform, after a Grok engineer teased the possibility of managing agents and background tasks directly from Tesla vehicles.
Grok already handles navigation, reminders, climate controls, and vehicle settings inside Teslas, while Grok Bot runs cloud-based workflows across websites and apps, making deeper integration a natural next step.
Tesla increasingly treats the cabin like a computing platform. Adding Grok Bot could turn commuting time into working time, with drivers assigning research, checking projects, or pulling meeting details by voice.
🍎 Tim Cook hands Apple’s keys to John Ternus ↗️LINK
Tim Cook finishes his 15-year run as Apple CEO today, with hardware chief John Ternus taking over September 1. Cook will remain at Apple as executive chairman.
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and eventually led hardware engineering. As CEO, he’ll inherit a company preparing an ambitious product cycle while Cook continues handling key political relationships.
Ternus barely gets a warm-up lap. He’ll lead Apple’s September 9 event, where the company reportedly plans to unveil its foldable iPhone Ultra, iPhone 18 Pro, and more.
