The company had been staffing switchboards with teenage boys pulled from telegraph work, but they cursed at callers and played pranks, so it began hiring women instead. Her sister Stella started a few hours later as the second, and Emma stayed in the job for more than 30 years.

Dyson's CameraJet went on sale Tuesday for $499. A 100,000-pixel camera in the brush head captures 28 images a second, spotting gaps between teeth and aiming a mouthrinse jet at them.
Dyson spent six years on it and trained the software on 470,000 dental images. The company says it removes 69% more plaque than premium rivals, based on its own lab testing.
Dyson says the camera runs only during live view or auto-jetting and stores nothing. That's the company's stated policy, not an audited one, which matters for a bathroom camera.
💰 FTC sues Amazon over alleged hidden ad surcharges ↗️LINK
The FTC and 22 state attorneys general sued Amazon Monday, alleging it secretly overcharged advertisers through a hidden surcharge added to its ad auctions in 2019. The complaint estimates over $20 billion collected.
Amazon previously told advertisers they paid only the minimum winning bid. The FTC alleges Amazon quietly added a "soft reserve price" and cites an executive describing an invented auction participant that raised prices.
Amazon calls the suit misguided and says its auctions saved advertisers $8 billion since 2021. It settled a separate FTC case over Prime for $2.5 billion last September.

Starman Holding is buying most of GoPro for $285 million in cash. Founder Nick Woodman now describes GoPro as an imaging and optical company working on national security areas including cameras, optics and AI infrastructure.
GoPro carried $92 million in debt and announced defense and aerospace consulting plans back in April. Starman says it wants to move production of optical components back to the United States.
Existing shareholders keep 10% of the company. That includes YouTuber Markiplier, who bought 8.5% days earlier and watched the stock double overnight.
🤖 Pentagon gives personnel their own ChatGPT and Grok ↗️LINK
The Pentagon added custom versions of ChatGPT and Grok to GenAI.mil, giving up to 3 million civilian and military personnel secure access to commercial AI models tailored for government work.
GenAI mil already has more than 1.7 million users and keeps sensitive data outside consumer channels, while ChatGPT Mil focuses on routine unclassified tasks and Grok targets broader operational work.
The lineup now includes Gemini, ChatGPT, and Grok but not Claude, turning the Pentagon’s AI portal into both a productivity platform and a visible map of Washington’s relationships with frontier labs.
❤️ New AI spots heart disease in two seconds ↗️LINK
Imperial College London researchers built an AI model that reads routine ECGs in under two seconds, detecting heart failure and valve disease that doctors may miss without follow-up imaging.
Researchers trained it on 10.6 million ECGs and tested 65,000 patients, where it identified heart failure in 81% of cases and valve disease in 90%.
The first trial will cover 590 patients across six hospitals, but the bigger idea is simple: use data hospitals already collect to catch problems before symptoms force another test.
