Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:

☀️ On this day: On November 6, 1980, 25-year-old Bill Gates signed a contract on behalf of Microsoft to create an operating system for IBM’s new PC, and it immediately paid Microsoft $700,000. Microsoft didn’t have one yet, so it bought rights to QDOS, short for “Quick and Dirty Operating System,” from Seattle Computer Products for a flat fee of $25,000. A clause let Microsoft sell the system to other companies, and within a year it had licensed MS-DOS to 70 of them.

Hand-picked news:

💰 Claude can now connect to your bank ↗️LINK

  • Anthropic launched Personal Finance, a beta tool that lets US users on Claude’s Pro, Max, and Ultra plans link bank and credit card accounts through Plaid and ask questions about their spending.

  • Claude sorts spending by category and flags duplicate charges, surprise fees, and rising bills. Anthropic says access stays read-only, covering balances and up to two years of transactions, with no ability to move money.

  • ChatGPT launched its own Plaid-powered finance tool in May and began rolling it out to free US users in October. Claude’s version arrives six months later, limited to paid plans for now.

🏡 Airbnb to launch AI travel agent by mid-2027 ↗️LINK

  • Airbnb plans to launch its own AI travel agent in the first half of 2027, the company announced alongside Q3 results that showed revenue jumping 19% to $4.87 billion, beating Wall Street estimates.

  • CEO Brian Chesky argues general-purpose AI agents handle routine chores well but not trips, noting 80% of travelers enjoy research. So Airbnb’s agent will build visual layouts from maps, photos, and itineraries instead of text.

  • The real moat sits after booking. Airbnb’s agent will handle refunds, rebooking, and safety support, which Airbnb says outside AI agents can’t easily touch. Airbnb wants the whole trip, not just the search.

📱 Google, Meta, TikTok sue California ↗️LINK

  • Google, Meta, and TikTok have filed separate lawsuits to block California's AB 1709, which would ban autoplay videos, endless scrolling, and personalized feeds for users under 16 starting January 2027.

  • The companies argue the law violates First Amendment protections and Section 230 by interfering with how platforms present content. California says the restrictions aim to protect children from addictive features.

  • The legal fight comes as the same platforms face thousands of lawsuits alleging harm to children's mental health. They're now fighting restrictions on features critics say helped create the problem.

🤖 Meta launches Muse AI avatar video chats ↗️LINK

  • Meta has rolled out Muse Voice to all U.S. users, letting them have real-time voice and video conversations with its AI agent through customizable animated avatars, including a fluffy dog named Jolly.

  • Meta's Realtime Avatar and Realtime Voice models power the conversations, with avatars using facial expressions and gestures that match the discussion. Muse can hear users and respond, but cannot actually see them.

  • The feature works on mobile, web, and Mac, with AI glasses and Meta's upcoming Charm wearable next. Meta is betting that giving AI a face makes conversations feel more personal.

🛻 Tesla to end Cybertruck production in 2027 ↗️LINK

  • Tesla will stop producing the Cybertruck in 2027, according to Elon Musk, and repurpose its Texas factory space to build more Cybercab robotaxis after years of disappointing pickup truck sales.

  • Musk originally projected 250,000 Cybertruck sales annually, but Tesla has sold only tens of thousands since 2023. The company is now shifting its focus toward robotaxis and humanoid robots.

  • The Cybertruck also missed its original promises of a sub-$40,000 price and 500-mile range, launching at roughly $60,000 with less range. Apparently, futuristic looks weren't enough to save it.
