Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On July 17, 1997, a computer operator at Network Solutions in Virginia ignored alarms at 2:30 a.m. Eastern time and pushed out a corrupted master list for all .com and .net domains, briefly knocking millions of websites and email addresses offline. Addresses simply could not be found, and messages bounced back marked as if the recipients had vanished. The failure was fixed in about four hours, but it was one of the first times the world felt how fragile its dependence on the internet had become.

Hand-picked news:
🤖 China's new open model beat Claude ↗️LINK
Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model that debuted at No. 1 on Arena .ai's Frontend Code leaderboard with 1,679 points, edging out Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol.
The board ranks models by human votes on real coding tasks, not synthetic benchmarks. K3 won six of seven frontend categories and leapt 17 places from its predecessor K2.6, which sat at 18th.
Moonshot itself concedes K3 still trails Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 overall, so the crown really covers website code. The full weights land July 27 and cost roughly $15 per million output tokens.
📈 Apple overtakes Nvidia as most valuable company ↗️LINK
Apple overtook Nvidia in Friday trading to become the world's most valuable company, its first time on top since April 2025. Apple sits near $4.88 trillion, just ahead of Nvidia's roughly $4.86 trillion.
Apple has climbed about 22% in 2026 while Nvidia gained roughly 7%. Investors reward Apple's AI push and light capital spending near 2.5% of sales, far below the hyperscalers. HSBC just upgraded the stock.
Nvidia was worth roughly $1.35 trillion more than Apple two months ago, so this is a fast turn. The lead now spans about $20 billion, and Nvidia, first to $5 trillion, could take it back.
🍿 Netflix says it used generative AI in 300 titles ↗️LINK
Netflix told shareholders on July 16 that generative AI workflows ran across roughly 300 of its 2026 titles, with the heaviest use in post-production. That marks its first hard number on AI in production.
Netflix named Glory (India), Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri (Brazil), and The American Experiment (US) as titles using AI for complex sequences. It says the tools cut costs and speed delivery.
One number frames the shift: last July, Netflix owned up to AI in a single show. Post-strike Hollywood will watch whether faster and cheaper stays a tool for artists, not a replacement for them.
🎨 Canva Code 2.0 launches free for all users ↗️LINK
Canva rolled out Canva Code 2.0 to everyone, including free plans. You describe a website, app, or game in plain language, the tool builds it, then you edit the output like a normal Canva design.
You can start from a prompt, one of 50-plus templates, or HTML imported from other AI tools. Canva says the update generates code 75% faster and cuts prompt-to-published time by 30%.
Canva's pitch is that your site should not look vibe-coded. For now it handles small-to-medium front-end apps like forms and quizzes, so it aims at everyday creators, not engineers shipping the next big platform.
📓 NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook ↗️LINK
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, folding its source-grounded research tool into the Gemini brand while keeping it standalone. The rebrand brings a fresh blue-purple gradient logo.
Every notebook now gets a secure cloud computer that writes and runs code against your sources. It is live for Ultra and Workspace tiers, reaches Pro users soon, and skips the free plan for now.
The rename barely matters, but the reach does. Google says over 30 million people and 600,000-plus organizations use it, and notebooks head into Search's AI Mode next, where a billion people land monthly.
