Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:

☀️ On this day: On June 4, 1996, the European Space Agency's Ariane 5 rocket exploded 37 seconds into its maiden flight, destroying four Cluster science satellites worth roughly $370 million. The cause was a single software error: guidance code reused from the slower Ariane 4 tried to squeeze a 64-bit number describing the rocket's velocity into a 16-bit slot, triggering an overflow that crashed the navigation system. It remains one of the most studied and expensive software bugs in history.

Hand-picked news:

🤖 ChatGPT reaches 1 billion monthly app users ↗️LINK

  • OpenAI's ChatGPT crossed 1 billion global monthly active app users in May, roughly three years after launch, making it the fastest app ever to hit the mark, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

  • ChatGPT beat the pace set by Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Sensor Tower also found US users who installed Anthropic's Claude in Q1 2026 spent 5% less time on ChatGPT a month later.

  • Claude sits at 56 million monthly users but grew about 640% year-over-year, dwarfing ChatGPT's 62%. Both firms are reportedly racing toward IPOs, so this user-count flexing arrives at a convenient moment.

💰 Alphabet raises record $85B for AI spending ↗️LINK

  • Alphabet is raising $85 billion in a record-breaking stock sale earmarked for AI, selling $45 billion this quarter after demand ran so high it overshot its $40 billion target, plus another $40 billion next quarter.

  • Berkshire Hathaway, the famed value investor, bought $10 billion worth. Even an $80 billion raise would top the previous equity offering record of $70 billion, set by Brazilian oil producer Petrobras back in 2010.

  • Alphabet plans to spend up to $190 billion on AI infrastructure this year. With Anthropic, SpaceX, and OpenAI all eyeing IPOs, this sale signals public investors still have the appetite to fund the roughly $8 trillion AI buildout.

💬 Meta launches AI sales agents across its apps ↗️LINK

  • Meta rolled out Meta Business Agent globally, putting AI agents on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger that answer questions, qualify leads, recommend products, book appointments, and close sales for any business across multiple languages.

  • Meta first tested the feature in October as a free trial in international markets, and over 1M businesses already use it. A standalone platform connects agents to outside tools like Zendesk and Shopify.

  • Meta starts the agents free but plans paid tiers by business size. The catch is trust: hackers reportedly fooled Meta's own support bot this week, which complicates the pitch that businesses should hand over their customers.

🤑 Google quietly wants to buy code to train AI ↗️LINK

  • Google has quietly emailed select Play Store developers, offering to buy access to their app codebases through a "confidential content offer pilot" that promises extra revenue for both active production code and old archived projects.

  • Google trails rivals in AI coding tools, with Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's Copilot pulling ahead. Web-scraped data apparently isn't cutting it, so Google now wants real, production-tested code to build better benchmarks and evals.

  • The email promises developers keep 100% of their IP under a non-exclusive license. It also never says the word "AI" once, though a link buried inside points straight to Google's "partnerships to improve our AI products" page.

🕵️ Five Eyes warns of Chinese recruiter scams ↗️LINK

  • The FBI, MI5, and the governments of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand warned that Chinese intelligence officers pose as recruiters on LinkedIn to coax Westerners into sharing sensitive information.

  • The spies represent fake companies supposedly based outside China and target security clearance holders, military personnel, journalists, academics, and think tank staff, especially across the Indo-Pacific region.

  • The advisory notes even unclassified information helps Beijing when spies combine it with other intelligence. So that "harmless" chat about your work might fill a gap someone in China wants closed.

Yesterday’s Poll Result:

Do you think SpaceX's $1.75 trillion valuation is justified?

  • A) Yes - 19%

  • B) No - 81% 🏆

Reader’s opinions:

“Nope. 81.3% got it right. Morningstar put the fair value at $780B, that’s less than half what they’re asking for. Only Starlink is actually making money. xAI is burning through $10B in 2026 alone. The whole thing is priced on a dream, not on what the company is doing right now. Hard pass.”
