Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:

☀️ On this day: On October 6, 1927, Warner Bros. premiered The Jazz Singer in New York, the first feature-length motion picture to incorporate synchronized sound, using its Vitaphone sound-on-disc system. The movie contains barely two minutes of synchronized dialogue and music, and Sam Warner, the brother who championed the technology, died of pneumonia the day before the premiere. Its 88 minutes needed 15 separate discs, each swapped at the right moment to keep the sound in sync with the picture.

Hand-picked news:

🛍️ TikTok adds AI shopping and one-click checkout ↗️LINK

  • TikTok announced a conversational Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct, a one-click checkout that lets users buy from brands straight from the For You feed. TikTok hasn't shared a launch date yet.

  • The assistant answers questions about sizing, shipping, and availability, remembers preferences during a chat, and completes the purchase. TikTok is building both features with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe.

  • TechCrunch notes the assistant could keep shoppers from asking ChatGPT for product advice. TikTok already owns the impulse; now it wants the research and the receipt too.

✍️ OpenAI adds watermarks to ChatGPT text ↗️LINK

  • OpenAI introduced textGrain, an invisible watermark coming to ChatGPT and Codex output across the EU. API customers worldwide can also opt in for select models, and OpenAI plans to open-source the technology.

  • The EU AI Act now requires AI providers to label output in a machine-detectable way. textGrain nudges word choices into a hidden pattern, and OpenAI says it matched or beat Google's SynthID in testing.

  • OpenAI's rollout looks cautious by comparison. Anthropic took its Claude watermark global in August and faced subscriber cancellations, while OpenAI keeps textGrain EU-only by default and limits its detector to vetted researchers.

📱 Facebook tests Reels-first home screen ↗️LINK

  • Meta is testing a Facebook version in India that drops some users straight into full-screen Reels when they open the app. Users can opt out, and the classic feed stays as a second tab.

  • Meta wants video at Facebook's core, where it says young adults spend about 60% of their time watching. Facebook head Tom Alison flagged the test in July and eyed the US for next year.

  • India is Facebook's largest market, with 400 million-plus users, and it already served as Meta's Reels lab after the 2020 TikTok ban. Facebook is now copying Instagram's homework, in the same classroom.

🚀 Anthropic offers startups free Claude Team ↗️LINK

  • Anthropic expanded its Claude for Startups program, offering a free year of Claude Team with up to five premium seats, plus $1,000 in API credits. It announced the change during SF Tech Week.

  • Companies qualify if they started in the last five years or raised money in the last two, a wider net than the program's earlier VC-partner route. Members also get Claude Marketplace access and office hours.

  • Anthropic says AI's benefits will mostly reach people through companies building on models. Translation: five free seats today, a paying API customer tomorrow, if the startup survives the year.

📢 OpenAI tests image ads inside ChatGPT ↗️LINK

  • OpenAI will test visual ads in ChatGPT, starting with product images that appear while users generate pictures. Testing begins later this month in the US with select advertisers, and ads stay labeled and separate.

  • OpenAI is courting performance marketers with attribution partners like AppsFlyer and Triple Whale. DV Rockerbox says WeightWatchers' acquisition costs ran 15.3% below its paid search benchmark.

  • With 1.2 billion weekly users, ChatGPT gives advertisers a huge new canvas. Triple Whale says 93% of Portland Leather's ChatGPT visitors were new, so your next cat portrait may come sponsored.
