Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:

☀️ On this day: On June 5, 1977, the Apple II went on sale with a MOS Technology 6502 processor, 4 KB of RAM, color graphics, and a base price of $1,298. Steve Wozniak designed it as a finished machine for ordinary buyers rather than a kit for hobbyists, housed in a molded plastic case by Jerry Manock. Apple kept selling versions of it until 1993, and the company that built it is now worth more than $4 trillion.

Hand-picked news:

😴 ChatGPT now dreams about you ↗️LINK

  • OpenAI launched a memory feature called "dreaming," a background system that turns your past chats into a running, category-sorted profile spanning areas like travel, hobbies, and work.

  • OpenAI's evals show the upgrade lifted factual recall from 41.5% to 82.8% and preference-following from 31.4% to 71.3%, and users can review, correct, or block topics anytime.

  • Dreaming starts with Plus and Pro users in the U.S. before reaching everyone else. Sam Altman keeps pitching hyper-personalized AI, and stickier memory also makes switching to rivals harder.

🤖 Anthropic's AI now writes its own code ↗️LINK

  • Anthropic published a report warning its current path could eventually leave humans unable to control AI, while revealing that Claude now writes over 80% of the code going into its own codebase.

  • The company's research arm says AI already accelerates AI development, edging toward recursive self-improvement, where a model designs its own successor with little human input. Anthropic wants the world to keep a pause option open.

  • Anthropic says it would only slow down if rivals verifiably did the same. Every figure here comes self-reported and unaudited, landing just days after the company filed to go public.

🐾 Microsoft launches Scout ↗️LINK

  • Microsoft launched Scout, an always-on agentic assistant built on the OpenClaw framework for Microsoft 365, giving users a named instance with a persistent identity that learns their work patterns over time.

  • Scout runs in the cloud across desktop and browser, connecting to inboxes and calendars with prepackaged skills, and it requires a GitHub Copilot subscription through Microsoft's experimental Frontier program.

  • Scout ships with a "policy conformance system" that audits its own behavior, a direct answer to the OpenClaw agent that reportedly ran amok in a researcher's inbox earlier this year. Microsoft wants the chaos minus the chaos.

🏛️ Uncle Sam wants a piece of OpenAI ↗️LINK

  • Senior U.S. officials have held preliminary talks with major AI companies about the federal government acquiring shares, with discussions centering on firms voluntarily ceding equity and directing returns toward public purposes like household dividends.

  • Sam Altman first pitched the idea to Trump in early 2025 and raised it again recently, while Anthropic says it is not having these conversations and OpenAI points to its April paper proposing a "Public Wealth Fund."

  • Critics across the spectrum see a trap, since the government would regulate companies it partly owns. Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon both want 50%, a rare agreement that tells you how nervous everyone is.

📸 Instagram Plus launches globally at $3.99 a month ↗️LINK

  • Meta launched Instagram Plus worldwide today at $3.99 a month, with most features built around boosting visibility, like Story Spotlight, which prioritizes your profile for friends, and Story Extend, which keeps stories up for 48 hours.

  • Subscribers also get rewatch stats, story viewer search, custom audience lists, app icons, bio fonts, six pinned profile items, and animated super hearts, with Meta promising more capabilities in the coming months.

  • Most of the headline perks amount to paying for reach on your own posts. For $3.99 a month, Instagram will help more people see the content you already make for free.

Yesterday’s Poll Result:

Do you think the world relies on AI chatbots a little too much already?

  • A) Yes - 74% 🏆

  • B) No - 26%

Reader’s opinions:

“AI isn’t the problem, blind trust in it is. I use it regularly, but I always cross reference with other sources before taking anything at face value. The misinformation issue comes from people skipping that step entirely and treating AI as the final word. Chatbots are a tool, not a source of truth.”
