Hand-picked news:

🚫 ‘Cancel ChatGPT’ trend grows after OpenAI military deal ↗️LINK

  • A growing number of users are canceling ChatGPT subscriptions and switching to rivals like Claude after OpenAI signed a deal allowing the U.S. military to use its AI models.

  • Critics accuse OpenAI of abandoning ethics, pointing to Anthropic’s refusal to support uses tied to mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons — while OpenAI says its agreement includes safeguards and “red lines.”

  • The backlash is gaining traction online, with users sharing account-deletion guides and Claude reportedly climbing to the top of the Apple App Store amid the controversy.

🪪 California mandates age checks at the OS level ↗️LINK

  • California’s Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043) will require all operating systems — including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux distributions, and SteamOS — to collect a user’s age at account setup and share an age-range signal with app developers starting January 1, 2027.

  • The law creates four age brackets (under 13, 13–15, 16–17, 18+) and shifts legal responsibility for age-appropriate content to developers, with fines of up to $7,500 per affected child for intentional violations.

  • While the bill passed unanimously, Governor Gavin Newsom has urged amendments before it takes effect, and enforcement may be especially difficult for decentralized Linux distributions that lack centralized account systems.

🏭 Jeff Bezos is buying AI-disrupted companies ↗️LINK

  • Jeff Bezos’ AI venture, Project Prometheus, is raising “tens of billions of dollars” to acquire industrial companies likely to be disrupted by AI — with plans to use the technology to improve margins and operations.

  • The firm previously raised $6.2B at a $30B valuation and has hired nearly 100 employees, including researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta.

  • This marks Bezos’ first major operational role since leaving Amazon, with Prometheus already acquiring AI agent startup General Agents as it builds out its strategy.

🎮 Sony hit with $2.7B antitrust lawsuit in the UK ↗️LINK

  • Sony is facing a £2 billion ($2.7B) class action lawsuit in the UK, accusing it of abusing a dominant position by overcharging PlayStation users for digital games and in-game content sold through the PlayStation Store.

  • The claim, covering around 12.2 million UK users from 2016 to 2026, argues Sony holds a near monopoly over PlayStation digital distribution and unfairly takes a 30% commission, inflating prices.

  • The opt-out lawsuit could result in payouts of about £162 ($217) per person if successful, and follows a similar UK ruling against Apple over App Store practices.

🍎 Apple announces the iPhone 17E ↗️LINK

  • Apple unveiled the iPhone 17E, its new $599 entry-level model, now starting with 256GB of storage (double last year’s base model) and available in black, white, and pink.

  • The phone features a 6.1-inch display with tougher Ceramic Shield 2, a new A19 processor, Apple’s faster C1X modem, MagSafe with Qi2 wireless charging (up to 15W), and a 48MP “fusion” camera with 2x optical-quality zoom.

  • Preorders begin March 4, with availability starting March 11. A 512GB version will also be available for $799.

Yesterday’s Poll Result:

Is Anthropic justified in refusing use for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons?

  • A. Yes, safety limits matter - 63% 🏆

  • B. No, national security comes first - 37%

“Safety limits are essential when developing powerful AI systems. Profit, competitive advantage, or government pressure should not outweigh safeguards that protect human rights and prevent large scale harm. Allowing unrestricted use for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons creates risks that are difficult or impossible to reverse. Responsible refusal in high risk areas shows necessary accountability and helps build long term public trust in AI technology.”
