Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On October 8, 1945, Raytheon filed the first patent application for microwave cooking technology, developed by engineer Percy Spencer. Spencer discovered the heating effect of microwaves after noticing a chocolate bar melting near radar equipment. The first commercial microwave, released in 1947, stood six feet tall, weighed 750 pounds, and cost $3,000. Today, 81 years later, microwave oven sits in more than 90% of American homes.

🤖 ChatGPT gets a major GPT-6 makeover ↗️LINK
OpenAI is rolling out Intelligent UI with GPT-6, adding interactive visuals to ChatGPT conversations. Users can tap buttons, adjust charts, edit graphs, or run calculators without leaving the chat.
OpenAI says the feature aims to make complex topics easier to learn. In demos, ChatGPT generated airplane lift diagrams, bicycle mechanics visuals, hiking maps, recipe guides, and personal savings calculators.
Users can turn down visuals, so text purists can keep their familiar ChatGPT. OpenAI starts with paid tiers Wednesday and reaches Free and Go Thursday. The chatbot essay now has competition.
🔀 Musk's Grok Bot will now call in its rivals ↗️LINK
Elon Musk said SpaceXAI's Grok Bot agent will now send tasks to rival models, naming Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, and Suno, picking "whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome."
Until now, Grok Bot ran only on SpaceXAI's own Grok models. SpaceXAI gave no official reason for the shift, and Musk shared no pricing, timeline, or rules for picking providers.
The two rivals keep getting closer. Earlier this year, SpaceX agreed to let Anthropic train and run Claude in its Colossus data center, and now Grok Bot will send work back to Claude.
💼 US suspends Microsoft, Adobe from green card program ↗️LINK
The Trump administration suspended Microsoft, Adobe, and six major IT firms from a program helping skilled foreign workers obtain green cards, citing alleged fraud and abuse of the immigration system.
Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling said officials would stop processing new and pending labor certification applications from the companies, while JD Vance accused them of prioritizing foreign workers over Americans.
The crackdown also targets nine universities, including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, over alleged student visa abuse. For tech firms relying on international talent, the hiring landscape just got more complicated.
🏠 Apple teams up with LG for smart home devices ↗️LINK
Apple and LG reportedly developed a lineup of smart home devices, including a video doorbell, thermostat, smart lock, and security cameras. LG will manufacture and sell them under its own brand.
The devices will connect to Apple's upcoming Siri-powered home hub, with several supporting Thread and Matter standards. The smart lock also features ultra-wideband technology for automatic unlocking when users approach.
Apple gets a broader smart home lineup without manufacturing everything itself, while LG handles production and support. It's a convenient way to compete with established players like Ring and Nest.
💸 Anthropic launches cheaper Claude Haiku 5.5 ↗️LINK
Anthropic released Claude Haiku 5.5, its fastest and most capable small model yet, cutting average operating costs by 75% and slashing input pricing from $1 to $0.10 per million tokens.
The model scored 72.4% on OSWorld computer-use tests, up from 15.7%, and introduced adjustable reasoning effort. Anthropic also halved Sonnet 5.5's cache-read pricing and added API credits for subscribers.
Smaller models increasingly handle repetitive tasks behind more powerful AI agents, and Haiku 5.5's performance gains make that approach cheaper. The budget option is getting harder to overlook.
