☀️ On this day: On November 4, 1982, Compaq announced its first computer, the Compaq Portable, an IBM-compatible PC weighing 28 pounds and powered by an Intel 8088 processor. Its engineers spent approximately $1 million reverse-engineering IBM's BIOS without copying its code, allowing the machine to run IBM PC software legally. Compaq sold 53,000 units in its first year and was eventually acquired by HP in 2002.

Hand-picked news:

🤖 Apple plans $1,000 home robot for 2027 ↗️LINK

  • Apple is reportedly building its first home robot, code-named J595 and possibly called HomeView Ultra, aiming for a 2027 launch at around $1,000, though delays could push it to 2028.

  • The tabletop device puts a 9-inch screen on a swiveling arm that tracks you during FaceTime calls. New CEO John Ternus is pushing robotics, but AI software is holding up mostly finished hardware.

  • The project began as a fancy video-calling gadget around 2019. Seven years later, engineers still hunt for features beyond FaceTime and light switching that justify a $1,000 price.

🎨 Canva cuts 1,271 jobs as growth slows ↗️LINK

  • Canva is laying off 1,271 employees, or 22% of its workforce, after growth slowed for the first time in a decade, marking a major shakeup for the design software giant.

  • CEO Melanie Perkins says Canva will merge its product, growth, and platform teams, give employees broader responsibilities, and introduce hybrid work requirements as the company looks to streamline operations.

  • Rising AI costs already pushed Canva to slash its growth forecast from 30% to 20%. Now, with ChatGPT, Gemini, and AI design startups gaining ground, Canva faces pressure from both sides.

🛑 CrowdStrike launches an AI Kill Switch ↗️LINK

  • CrowdStrike has unveiled an AI Kill Switch for its Falcon Guardian security platform, allowing businesses to immediately cut off AI agents that behave unexpectedly or pose security risks.

  • The switch disconnects agents from their AI models without shutting down the models themselves. Human administrators control activation, and the system logs every use for security monitoring and accountability.

  • CrowdStrike's CEO compares the feature to a race car's brake, which agents can't override. As businesses give AI agents more access, having an emergency stop button looks increasingly practical.

🍿 Netflix launches AI Discover recommendations ↗️LINK

  • Netflix is rolling out an experimental AI Discover tab for English-language users on supported U.S. TVs, letting viewers find shows and movies based on their mood, available time, or viewing preferences.

  • Users can browse themes like "something light," "scare me," and "quick watches," refine results, and use a new "Tune Your Recommendations" button to save preferred suggestions or exclude unwanted titles.

  • Netflix calls AI Discover its "test kitchen" and will use feedback to shape future features. If it works, choosing a movie might finally take less time than watching one.

🍎 Apple opens Siri AI to all app developers ↗️LINK

  • Apple released a Siri AI Developer Preview in its new 27.3 betas, letting any app plug its own actions into the rebuilt assistant that launched in beta with iOS 27 in September.

  • Until now, Siri AI could only use third-party apps through Apple’s preset templates for common tasks. Developers can now build custom actions and “skills” that teach Siri to chain several steps together.

  • The walled garden cracks open, slowly. App Store submissions don’t open until spring, and Apple hasn’t given a date, so no third-party Siri AI integration will reach the App Store this holiday season.
