Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:
☀️ On this day: On May 8, 1995, The New York Times announced it would join eight other newspaper publishers in the New Century Network, with the goal of linking local online news services into a national network on the World Wide Web. It was a pivotal early bet that journalism's future would live online, made at a time when most Americans had never visited a website. The Times today reaches over 10 million digital subscribers, more than any U.S. newspaper in history.

Hand-picked news:
📸 Apple's AirPods are getting cameras for AI ↗️LINK
Apple is nearing early mass production testing for camera-equipped AirPods that feed low-resolution visual data to Siri, letting users ask things like what to cook based on ingredients in front of them.
The AirPods use longer stems to house the cameras, include a small LED that lights up when visual data is being sent to the cloud, and were delayed after Apple's upgraded Siri hit setbacks.
Apple originally aimed to ship these in early 2026, but with improved Siri now tracking for September, a fall launch alongside AirPods Pro 3-style hardware looks like the likely window.
🆘 ChatGPT adds a Trusted Contact feature ↗️LINK
OpenAI is rolling out an opt-in feature letting adult ChatGPT users designate a Trusted Contact who gets notified if the system detects conversations about self-harm or suicide.
The notification is intentionally limited, sharing no chat details or transcripts. A specially trained human team reviews flagged conversations before any alert goes out.
OpenAI built a similar feature for minors after a 16-year-old died following months of confiding in ChatGPT. This extends that same logic to adults who want it.
🎙️ OpenAI launches 3 new real-time voice models ↗️LINK
OpenAI released GPT-Realtime-2, GPT-Realtime-Translate, and GPT-Realtime-Whisper, bringing live reasoning, 70+ language translation, and streaming transcription to voice agents in one toolkit.
Realtime-2 scores 96.6% on Big Bench Audio, up from 81.4%, and can run multiple tools at once, talk while it thinks, and adjust tone for more natural conversation.
Zillow, Priceline, and Deutsche Telekom are already building on these models, which suggests the real monetization of AI voice is happening in enterprise workflows, not consumer apps.
🤖 Airbnb says AI now produces 60% of its new code ↗️LINK
Airbnb told investors that AI wrote 60% of its engineers' code in Q1 2026, and its AI customer support bot now resolves 40% of issues without a human, up from 33% earlier this year.
CEO Brian Chesky said AI lets one engineer with agents do work that previously required a team of 20, and Airbnb is using that leverage to build tools for API partners it lacked resources to serve before.
Chesky was unusually candid that nobody has cracked AI for travel yet, citing four real problems: too much text, no direct manipulation, poor comparison tools, and chatbots that are single-player in a multiplayer booking world.
🎮 Nintendo is raising Switch 2 prices ↗️LINK
Nintendo raised the Switch 2's US price by $50 to $500, blaming rising memory costs and US tariffs, which it estimates will add roughly 100 billion yen in extra costs this fiscal year.
Despite selling nearly 20 million units in three quarters, Nintendo is forecasting only 16.5 million Switch 2 sales next year, well below analyst expectations of 20 million or more.
The $50 hike is modest next to Sony's $150 PS5 increase over the past year, but Nintendo's younger, more price-sensitive fan base means even a smaller jump could slow adoption more sharply.
