Hand-picked news:

💻 Apple introduces $599 MacBook Neo ↗️LINK

  • Apple unveiled the MacBook Neo, a new entry-level laptop powered by the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 lineup, starting at $599 with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.

  • The 13-inch laptop features a 1080p camera, two USB-C ports, spatial audio speakers, and color-matched keyboards in four colors, but skips upgrades like Thunderbolt, MagSafe, and RAM expansion.

  • Preorders begin now with shipping starting March 11, positioning the Neo as Apple’s most affordable MacBook as older M-series models are phased out.

🛡️ OpenAI revises Pentagon deal after backlash ↗️LINK

  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company revised parts of its Pentagon AI agreement after employee criticism, user cancellations, and a surge of sign-ups to rival Anthropic.

  • Altman admitted the original deal was rushed and looked “opportunistic and sloppy,” while OpenAI researcher Noam Brown clarified the company will not deploy models to the NSA or other intelligence agencies for now.

  • The company held an internal all-hands meeting addressing the controversy, with Altman calling the decision complex but acknowledging the deal has caused significant brand damage and negative PR.

💬 X begins testing standalone X Chat app ↗️LINK

  • X has launched a limited beta for a new standalone messaging app called X Chat on iOS, with the first 1,000 test slots filling within two hours via Apple’s TestFlight.

  • The company plans to expand access soon and is also preparing an Android version of the app.

  • The move marks a shift away from Elon Musk’s “everything app” strategy for X, while security experts have raised concerns that X Chat may be less secure than competitors like Signal.

🕶️ Meta AI glasses send private videos to reviewers ↗️LINK

  • An investigation found that video captured by Meta’s Ray-Ban AI glasses has been sent to data annotation workers in Nairobi, where clips reportedly include sensitive content such as nudity, sexual activity, and financial information.

  • Workers say the system’s automatic face anonymization often fails, raising privacy concerns about identifiable footage being reviewed.

  • Critics also argue many users may not realize the glasses are recording when interacting with the AI assistant, while the contractor handling the data — Sama — has previously faced scrutiny over low pay and disturbing moderation work.

🌕 NASA targets April 1 launch for Artemis II Moon mission ↗️LINK

  • NASA resolved the issue that forced the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket for the Artemis II mission to be removed from the launch pad, but the vehicle will not return to the pad at Kennedy Space Center for a couple more weeks.

  • The first launch opportunity is scheduled for April 1 at 6:24 pm EDT (22:24 UTC), with additional backup windows available on April 3, 4, 5, and 6 depending on mission trajectory constraints.

  • Artemis II will send the Orion spacecraft with four astronauts around the far side of the Moon and back to Earth, marking the first human mission near the Moon since 1972 and the first crewed flight of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to land astronauts on the lunar surface by 2028.
