Hand-picked news:

🍏 Apple faces its biggest exec shake-up ↗️LINK

  • Apple is seeing an unprecedented wave of senior departures across AI, design, legal, environmental policy, and operations, marking its largest leadership turnover since Steve Jobs died. Key figures leaving include Lisa Jackson, Kate Adams, John Giannandrea, Alan Dye, Jeff Williams, and Luca Maestri.

  • The timing aligns with intensified succession planning for Tim Cook’s expected 2026 retirement, with hardware chief John Ternus emerging as the leading internal candidate. Apple is also bringing in new leaders like Jennifer Newstead and Stephen Lemay as it restructures major roles.

  • The shake-up affects crucial areas including AI progress, design direction, regulatory strategy, and supply-chain leadership. Apple’s future will depend on how well incoming leaders execute as the company faces pressure to innovate and compete in new categories.

🧩 Microsoft’s AI strategy shows cracks ↗️LINK

  • Reports indicate weak demand for Microsoft’s AI and Azure offerings, with missed sales goals and increasingly unfavorable comparisons to Google Gemini, whose models are now outpacing both Copilot and OpenAI’s top systems.

  • Critics argue Microsoft, under Satya Nadella, has chased trends instead of customer needs—shipping half-baked AI features, relying heavily on NVIDIA hardware, and struggling to match Google’s more polished, vertically integrated approach.

  • While GitHub Copilot and some enterprise tools are bright spots, Microsoft’s broader AI direction appears chaotic, risking a future defined more by reselling server capacity than by true innovation unless product quality improves.

📰 Meta signs new AI data deals ↗️LINK

  • Meta reached commercial AI agreements with outlets including USA Today, People Inc, CNN, Fox News, The Daily Caller, Washington Examiner and Le Monde, allowing its chatbot to surface real-time news and link directly to publisher content.

  • The deals are part of Meta’s push to boost engagement with its AI services as competition intensifies, especially after Llama 4’s weak reception and ongoing budget shifts away from its metaverse projects.

  • Meta says users will now get more diverse, timely news results through Meta AI, and the company plans to expand partnerships further; financial terms were not disclosed.

⚠️ OpenAI races to launch GPT-5.2 ↗️LINK

  • Sam Altman reportedly issued a “code red” inside OpenAI, accelerating the release of GPT-5.2 to counter strong competition from Google’s Gemini 3 and Anthropic’s latest models.

  • Sources say GPT-5.2 is already finished and may arrive as early as next week, potentially around December 9th, with internal evaluations suggesting it outperforms Gemini 3 in reasoning tasks.

  • The earlier launch reflects mounting competitive pressure, and OpenAI is also expected to shift its broader ChatGPT strategy toward better speed, stability, and customization in the coming months.

🚦 China deploys humanoid traffic robot ↗️LINK

  • Hangzhou has begun testing Hangxing No. 1, a 1.8-metre AI-powered humanoid robot that directs traffic, detects violations, issues polite voice warnings, and synchronises with traffic-light systems at a major intersection.

  • Equipped with cameras, sensors, gesture-based signalling, and a swappable 6–8 hour battery, the robot can spot infractions like helmetless riders, stop-line violations, and jaywalking, logging incidents to a police database while a nearby officer intervenes only when needed.

  • Integrated with the city’s “City Brain” platform, the robot’s decision-making improves through continuous data review, with future updates planned to expand its capabilities as China broadens its public-facing robotics programs.
