Hand-picked news:

🚨 Anthropic warns self-building AI is near ↗️LINK

  • Anthropic warned in its updated IPO filing that future AI models could soon reach recursive self-improvement (RSI), a milestone where AI dramatically accelerates the development of more capable AI systems.

  • The company already uses Claude to write code, run experiments, and develop new models, but warns that rapid capability gains could outpace safety measures before researchers even recognize the acceleration.

  • Anthropic says no current model has crossed that threshold and plans to keep humans involved in AI development. Even the company anticipating self-building AI isn't ready to hand over the keys.

🤖 Meta builds humanoid robot for household ↗️LINK

  • Meta built a humanoid robot prototype codenamed Max for household chores, according to The Information. It stands about 1.5m tall, weighs roughly 48kg, and has a facial-expression display and hands for grabbing small objects.

  • Meta partnered with Chinese robotics firm Fourier to finish Max in about three months, using NVIDIA’s Jetson Thor chips. A follow-up, Max 2, began in September with a projector and sensors for climbing stairs.

  • Max has a sequel before it even has a price. Meta set no launch date for a consumer version, so your dishes and laundry remain your problem for now.

📱 SpaceX in talks to buy Boost Mobile ↗️LINK

  • SpaceX has held talks with EchoStar to buy Boost Mobile or tap its network, which Boost leases from AT&T and T-Mobile, The Washington Post reports. Elon Musk met EchoStar’s chairman last month.

  • Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all refused Musk’s requests to use their networks. A deal could hand SpaceX roughly 7.4 million wireless customers, mostly on Boost, plus ground coverage for its planned satellite-cell hybrid service.

  • There’s a catch: Boost’s network leases may need AT&T and T-Mobile’s approval to transfer to a new owner. Those are two of the three carriers that already turned Musk down.

🧊 Hackers heat supermarket freezers across Europe ↗️LINK

  • Hackers remotely cranked fridges and freezers to 50°C at dozens of supermarkets across at least seven European countries on Monday, hitting around 40 Delhaize stores plus ICA, Coop, SuperValu, Carrefour and Spar locations.

  • The attackers switched units into defrost mode, and ICA says its hit stores all ran Danfoss refrigeration controls, the same supplier targeted in last month’s attack on hundreds of French supermarkets.

  • One Belgian Delhaize store threw out €100,000 of food, and nobody has claimed responsibility. Danfoss says many controllers in the French attack were too old to patch, making “update your freezer” real IT advice.

⌚ Apple Watch AI conversation recaps enter beta ↗️LINK

  • Apple is rolling out developer beta testing for Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, introducing four AI features for sound detection, song identification, conversation rewind, and automatic notes.

  • Live Rewind retrieves the last 15 seconds of conversation as text, while Siri Recaps summarizes discussions without saving raw audio. Apple uses on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to protect privacy.

  • Apple requires opt-in, plays a chime during Live Rewind, and deletes unsaved snippets after 30 seconds. It's a notably cautious approach to putting conversation memory on people's wrists.

Yesterday’s Poll Result:

Would you welcome a data center next door for thousands of jobs?

  • A) Yes - 21%

  • B) No - 79% 🏆

Reader’s opinions:

❝

“The data center itself isn't the problem. The challenge is the infrastructure cannot support the required energy usage. In my crazy mind, the providers like PG&E and watchguards CPUC will drain the ratepayers to support their profitability.”

❝

“We all know that the first priority of AI companies is to limit the number of human beings they need to employ. Any short-term gains in the job market will be wiped out at the soonest opportunity. Additionally, the impacts of noise, heat, and pollution greatly diminish any benefits that might be had. Lastly, with water becoming more scarce, it's all but suicide for communities that don't have enough already to allow data centers into the neighborhood.”
