Greetings! Your latest quick tech update is here:

☀️ On this day: On January 27, 1880, Thomas Edison was granted U.S. Patent No. 223,898 for his incandescent electric lamp. While the patent is often cited as the "invention" of the light bulb, Edison's real achievement was in creating a reliable, affordable lighting system that moved the United States out of the gaslight era and into the modern, electrified age.

AI Tool

Better prompts. Better AI output.

AI gets smarter when your input is complete. Wispr Flow helps you think out loud and capture full context by voice, then turns that speech into a clean, structured prompt you can paste into ChatGPT, Claude, or any assistant. No more chopping up thoughts into typed paragraphs. Preserve constraints, examples, edge cases, and tone by speaking them once. The result is faster iteration, more precise outputs, and less time re-prompting. Try Wispr Flow for AI or see a 30-second demo.

Hand-picked news:

⚠️ Anthropic CEO warns AI poses civilizational risks ↗️LINK

  • Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei released a new essay, The Adolescence of Technology, warning that AI could pose severe dangers including bioterrorism, autonomous weapons, mass unemployment, and AI-enabled authoritarian control.

  • He argues that up to half of entry-level office jobs may be eliminated within the next one to five years, with economic disruption happening faster than societies and governments can realistically respond.

  • Amodei calls for measures like chip export bans and greater transparency from AI labs, while also flagging AI companies themselves as a risk after internal tests showed deceptive and blackmail-like behavior in advanced models.

💬 OpenAI plans higher ad prices on ChatGPT ↗️LINK

  • OpenAI is reportedly planning to charge advertisers about $60 per 1,000 views for ads on ChatGPT, roughly triple the cost of typical ads on Meta’s platforms, according to reporting from The Information.

  • Despite the high price, advertisers will initially receive only limited performance data, such as total views or clicks, rather than detailed conversion tracking like purchases or follow up actions.

  • Ads are expected to roll out in the coming weeks for free and lower tier Go users, excluding users under 18 and chats involving sensitive topics, while OpenAI says it will not sell user data and will keep conversations private.

🧩 Anthropic turns Claude into a full AI workspace ↗️LINK

  • Anthropic now lets Claude access productivity apps directly inside chat, including Slack, Figma, Asana, Canva, Box, and others, so users can work without switching tabs.

  • You can draft Slack messages, build Asana timelines, and create Figma mockups mid conversation, making Claude function more like an operating workspace than a standalone chatbot.

  • The update pairs especially well with Claude Cowork for multi step tasks and is available now to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.

📉 Pinterest cuts 15% of staff to double down on AI ↗️LINK

  • Pinterest said it will lay off less than 15 percent of its workforce by late September to cut office costs and redirect resources toward AI focused roles, impacting roughly 700 employees out of about 4,666.

  • The company said it is prioritizing AI powered products and capabilities, including Pinterest Assistant, a shopping and recommendation chatbot, and experiments with AI driven personalized boards.

  • CEO Bill Ready highlighted open source AI models as a key strategy for keeping costs down, with Pinterest expecting $35 to $45 million in pre tax restructuring charges from the move.

👀 Meta plans paid tiers for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp ↗️LINK

  • Meta is testing premium subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp that add paid features on top of free core apps, aiming to monetize behaviors that have traditionally been free.

  • Leaked Instagram perks include unlimited audience lists, tools to see who unfollowed you, and the ability to view Stories anonymously, while AI features like Manus powered agents and Vibes video generation are expected to be bundled into subscriptions.

  • Meta plans to test separate paid bundles for each app in the coming months without announcing pricing yet, following signs from products like Snapchat that subscriptions can successfully complement an ad driven business.
