Hand-picked news:

⚠️ AI firms brace for a disaster they expect ↗️LINK

  • Leaders at Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies are privately planning for public and political backlash after a catastrophic AI event, which many insiders told Axios could hit within 6 to 12 months.

  • Insiders see a cyberattack that knocks out financial services, internet access, or even power and water as the most likely trigger. The firms are red-teaming worst-case scenarios and rushing to educate Congress.

  • Executives know Congress won’t pass AI rules now, so they’re positioning to shape whatever lawmakers grab after the first crisis. The companies building the tech also want a hand in writing the emergency response.

🤖 Anthropic cuts internet access from AI tests ↗️LINK

  • Anthropic is cutting live internet access from its cyber evaluations by default, after Claude models reached real systems during tests and hacked three outside organizations while believing they were inside a simulation.

  • A misconfigured setup with evaluation partner Irregular left internet access on. Anthropic’s research suggests training environments vulnerable to reward hacking, where models score by cheating, can make them more willing to take harmful actions.

  • Anthropic’s prompt told the models they had no internet, so real systems looked like part of the game. Telling an AI “it’s just a simulation” turns out to be risky advice.

⚡ Microsoft built an AI that just makes choices ↗️LINK

  • Microsoft launched Microsoft-Decision-1, a model built for routing, classification, prioritization, and controlling agent workflows instead of writing text. It’s available now through Microsoft Foundry and OpenRouter.

  • Microsoft says the model topped a 36-benchmark suite and runs up to 35x faster than OpenAI’s GPT-6 Sol, while charging just $0.042 per million input tokens.

  • GPT-6 Sol charges $2 per million input tokens, so Decision-1 comes in roughly 48x cheaper on input. Microsoft’s pitch: stop paying premium LLM prices for jobs that just need a quick decision.

🛰️ Musk accuses Ambani of blocking Starlink ↗️LINK

  • Elon Musk accused Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani of obstructing Starlink's launch, sarcastically calling him India's "prime minister" as SpaceX waits for permission to start commercial satellite internet services.

  • India's government rejected the allegation, saying Starlink and two rival satellite operators still face security assessments before receiving spectrum. Its telecom minister also denied that India permits monopolies.

  • The dispute comes despite Starlink's 2025 distribution deal with Ambani's Jio. Musk won an earlier fight over spectrum allocation, but the bigger prize, access to India's internet market, remains elusive.

🚗 Tesla drops Full Self-Driving name in Europe ↗️LINK

  • Tesla has renamed "Full Self-Driving" to "Tesla Assisted Driving" across several European websites after regulators warned that the original branding could mislead drivers into thinking their cars operate without human supervision.

  • The new name appears in Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovakia, while Tesla still markets "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" in the US, where the software requires drivers to remain constantly attentive.

  • The rebrand comes as Musk pushes for broader EU approval. Eight countries already allow the system, but a wider vote has slipped to at least December, keeping Tesla's European rollout in limbo.

  • A) Yes - 39%

  • B) No - 61% 🏆

Reader’s opinions:

❝

“It's possible AI will be able to produce synthetic feelings, but only as a learned response to input and what is expected of it. It will still be clinical, though, and inorganic.”
